    Indeed....It happens all the time, even when I stop to let folk across, they still hesitate. Many peds it seems, are also unaware of the new HC rules.

    One sure way to improve ped confidence and slow motorists down at junctions, is with updated infra. Namely, to carry pavements straight across the mouth of side-roads at pavement-level, with a ramp either side for the cars.

    Oh dear. Things are worse than I thought! Have you heard of the " hierarchy" system which was introduced a couple of years back? ( probably not!) . Well, now the onus is clearly on motorists to be on the lookout for pedestrians. So when approaching a turn drivers must be conscious of the fact that a pedestrian might a) crossing the road or b) about to cross the road. Again, it's the driver's responsibility to give way to pedestrians. BTW. with all that in mind, if a pedestrian was injured in such a situation, I can't imagine what defence a driver could put up either in a criminal court, or the private prosecution which would certainly follow.

    Would be the simplest thing in the world, to wear a few extra layers for cushioning. Then stand on a corner, waiting to step out at the right moment, trapping the unwary motorist into a collision. Once the Police have attended/assigned an incident number and the 'injured' ped has the drivers insurance details, the jobs a good'un....Ped subsequently puts in for £20k to cover permanent back-pain and long-term loss of earnings, etc. For the suckered motorist, it could be a very dear do indeed!

    The onus has ALWAYS been on motorists to be on the lookout, not only for pedestrians, but for all other road users. Proper, competent and responsible drivers don’t need a new Highway Code rule to be made aware of other more vulnerable road users.
    Just this afternoon I was turning into London Street from Hoghton Street, a middle aged couple where walking towards the junction, their body language made it obvious that they would be “exercising” their right under the new rules and simply walked straight across the road without making any attempt whatsoever to check it was safe.

    Very enlightening. And very depressing. You can't get it into your head that when approaching a turn, motorists should be looking out for pedestrians and be prepared to give way. Drivers shouldn't be unexpectedly surprised to find a pedestrian standing by the kerb.

    JOINED 21 yrs ago and has only 92 posts and some of them came into play lately when I car lol and silly me ( Carliol and millsey accounts were exposed/outed ). once again supporting the PNP

    Admin know and lower ranking admin threaten to ban anyone (or just me) that susses it . ( like I once said maybe he is now admin…. that would be dark day ) But now more and more are onto it and although it keeps up threads it’s very bad show but everyone still bites and as long as they do it will continue .

    Yes this is correct they only have priority if they have STARTED crossing after LOOKING PROPERLY ( then there won’t be any cars coming to turn ).
    lurking around on the corner waiting to jump out and hold up cars turning doesn't count. The Highway Code is still subject to common sense and if it’s safer to wait for a safe time and place to cross it’s obviously better, they even teach this to children in the green cross code with tufty the rabbit AND the green cross code man.
    Sometimes common sense can’t be translated into black and white and you certainly can’t booklearn it and if you see a car coming and decide to TAKE A CHANCE to cross in front of it then you have the common sense of a cyclist that is not really trained like motorists to use the road, didn’t pass a test and come out with let’s jump in front of cars and claim comments. Which not even you can support … this time

    Anyone who relies on their "rights" to protect them whilst crossing a road needs help.

    You have people who can't park, reverse or operate their car properly, some with all sorts of health issues and your thinking of relying on them for your safety, you would have to be mad.

    You only need once and your dead or seriously injured.
