At Remembrance Sunday Parades and Services on 11 November West Lancashire will pay tribute to those brave people who have suffered or lost their lives serving their country.

This year the Services will be especially poignant as 11 November 2018 marks the centenary of the end of World War One.

West Lancashire Mayor, Councillor Noel Delaney, who will be attending services in Ormskirk and Burscough, said: “Remembrance Sunday is an extremely important occasion every year when we come together to honour brave men and women who have died in the service of their Country. As this year is the 100th Anniversary of the end of World War One I would urge people to make a special effort to attend a Remembrance Service or parade near you.

"West Lancashire is very proud of its links with the armed forces and large numbers attend parades every year. We will all gather with great pride to pay our respects to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.”

In Ormskirk, The Mayor, accompanied by the Council’s Chief Executive, Kim Webber, will attend the event. The parade assembles at St Anne’s RC Church at 9.35am for a short service which begins at 9.50am, and will include a minute’s silence, Last Post and Reveille. Then at 10am the parade will march to the War Memorial in Coronation Park for a service. There will be a minute’s silence, Last Post, laying of wreaths and Reveille. At 10.20am the parade will march to Ormskirk Parish Church for the main Service of Remembrance, which will start at 10.45am. A salute will be taken outside the Parish Church at 11.30am. Tea and biscuits will be served in the New Church Hall.

And in Skelmersdale, Deputy Mayor, Councillor Gaynar Owen, accompanied by the Director of Housing & Inclusion, Jacqui Sinnott-Lacey, will join the parade which marches from Liverpool Road, Skelmersdale, at 10.35am, to the war memorial on Sandy Lane for a service and wreath laying ceremony at 11am, which will include a minute’s silence, Last Post and Reveille. Light refreshments will be available after the service at the Wardens’ Club, Blaguegate Lane, Skelmersdale.

And the Mayor will attend the parade and service in Burscough. The parade assembles outside Legion headquarters, Lord Street, Burscough at 1.30pm and marches off at 1.45pm to arrive at the War Memorial in Junction Lane at 2pm, where a wreath is laid and a short service will take place. A church service will be taking place at St. John's Church in Burscough commencing at 2.45pm. Refreshments will be provided at legion headquarters.

In addition, Parish Councils in Aughton, Lathom and Up Holland are arranging parades and ceremonies, and services will be held at many churches in the Borough.

Meanwhile, HMS Ringtail Monument, Pippin Street, Ringtail Retail Park will see a special service on Saturday 10 November and a two minute silence after which wreaths will be laid at the monument. Guests should gather at around 10.00am. The Service will start 10.30am; all are welcome.

The Council has planned a number of additional tributes to mark the centenary. A piper's tribute will play 'When the Battle's O'er' in Coronation Park, Ormskirk at 6am to mark the time when the Armistice was signed 100 years before. In the evening a beacon will be lit in Beacon Country Park at 7pm as West Lancashire. Prior to the lighting of the beacons at 6.55pm the Last Post will be played.

Silent Soldier Silhouettes have been placed at the war memorials in Skelmersdale and Burscough, and a third will be placed by the memorial in Ormskirk in time for Remembrance Sunday. Also around the time of Remembrance Sunday the Clock Tower in Ormskirk and the Light Cube in Skelmersdale will be coloured red and white.
