An online petition has been started to remove all tolls from the River Mersey crossings.
The petition, was started by Merseyside resident Kenny Harper.
Kenny said...
"The River Mersey will end up with 2 bridges and 2 tunnels that will be tolled in the next 12 months. The cost of the build, upkeep and repair of these huge national infrastructures have been given to the people of Merseyside. Who pays for the upkeep of the bridges & tunnels of The River Thames?
The bridges & tunnels are part of the national infrastructure and should not be the responsibility of the people of Merseyside in the same way the bridge to Skye is not theirs to pay for, the Bridges of The Thames are not purely for the people of London.
There are many roads, bridges & tunnels that are paid for nationally including the upkeep, I feel the same should be done on Merseyside.

So how exactly is this being paid for by the people of Merseyside.? Is no one outside Merseyside allowed to use it?
I rarely have need to cross the river, so why should I and many others like me have to pay for you to travel for free? If you use it, you pay for it....simple. Don't like it? Don't use it.....
The datford crossing is a toll, would you like to pay for that when you probably only use it once a year......

What a crazy.. suggestion. If you use it, you
pay like everyone else. If you don't want to pay
nip across to M56 then come back up the M53.

If you follow that logic you would have to pay a toll on every road - if you use it pay after all.

You could use that logic for so many other things such as schools, hospitals & motorways. This should be part of the road network and as such free to use.

Really - we all pay for roads via the Road Fund Licence and plethora of other taxes imposed on the long suffering motorist. Clearly construction and maintenance of a tunnel or bridge will far exceed the costs associated with an average road and so it would seem fair that these extra costs are borne by those deriving the most benefit.
