    An Eye for an Eye

Everyone is aware that Laws are upgraded from time to time to suit modern needs. Right?

Even the Law/Law Courts refer to the Bible. Now in the Bible, under Luke 69:29, there appears the lines in a verse "Turn the other Cheek"
Bible Historians believe that Luke was written some fifty years before Matthew's verses. Matthew 5:38 included in one verse "An Eye for an Eye, a Tooth for a Tooth"

Is this an upgrading from the earlier writings in response to the activity at the time?

    Read verse 39.
    'Non Acceptum Crappum.'
Lead me not into temptation. I can find the way myself.
    I wish I was a schwa. They're never stressed.

The bible like ever religious book can be taken how to wish it to be. Religion of every kind has a lot to answer for, OR is used as an excuse to enforce your will.

    one line to live by...

"do unto others as you would have done unto you"

Perfect example of not reading in context

    Let's quote:

5:38 "You have heard that it was said,
‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’"

    5:39 "But I tell you, don’t resist him who is evil;
but whoever strikes you on your right
cheek, turn to him the other also"

It's from a baby talk version of the New Testament, but I suspect that is all most people on here could cope with.

I guess a perfect example of you can read into holy books what ever you wish, also goes to show how little WE know about the book we supposedly follow.

Across the Old Testament and New Testament virtually everything apart from "god" is contradicted at some stage (and Matthew 27:46 has a go at that). There is something for everybody. It allows the left wing pacifist gay vicar and the "god hates fags" crowd at Westboro Baptist Church to both be described as "Christians".

It also assumes the person striking 'the right cheek' is right handed.

A left handed person would surely strike the left cheek.

Being struck on your Right cheek, if facing would probably be by a Leftie unless it was a backhander.

I set the scene for a right handed person striking another.

Is the moral of this thread to do with The 'Christian' reaction to
    hate and violence?
