    Barclays Bank

Subject: Barclay Bank - This is Brilliant !!! This is true!!

Note to self: 'Cancel credit cards prior to death!

Be sure and cancel your credit cards before you die! This is so priceless and so easy to see it happening - customer service, being what it is today!

A lady died this past January, and Barclays bank billed her for February and March for their annual service charges on her credit card, and then added late fees and interest on the monthly charge. The balance had been £0.00, now is somewhere around £60.00.

A family member placed a call to the Barclay Bank:

    Family Member:
'I am calling to tell you that she died in January.'

    Barclay:
'The account was never closed and the late fees and charges still apply.'

    Family Member:
'Maybe, you should turn it over to collections.'

    Barclay:
'Since it is two months past due, it already has been..'

    Family Member:
So, what will they do when they find out she is dead?'

    Barclay:
'Either report her account to the frauds division or report her to the credit bureau, maybe both!'

    Family Member:
'Do you think God will be mad at her?'

    Barclay:
    'Excuse me?'

    Family Member:
'Did you just get what I was telling you . . . The part about her being dead?'

    Barclay:
'Sir, you'll have to speak to my supervisor.'

    Supervisor gets on the phone:
    Family Member:
'I'm calling to tell you, she died in January.'

    Barclay:
'The account was never closed and the late fees and charges still apply.'

    Family Member:
'You mean you want to collect from her estate?'

    Barclay:
    (Stammer) 'Are you her lawyer?'

    Family Member:
    'No, I'm her great nephew.'
    (Lawyer info given)

    Barclay:
'Could you fax us a certificate of death?'

    Family Member:
    'Sure.'
    (fax number is given )

    After they get the fax:

    Barclay:
'Our system just isn't set up for death. I don't know what more I can do to help.'

    Family Member:
'Well, if you figure it out, great! If not, you could just keep billing her. I don't think she will care.'

    Barclay:
'Well, the late fees and charges do still apply.'

    Family Member:
'Would you like her new billing address?'

    Barclay:
    'That might help.'
    Family Member:

' Finchley Memorial Cemetery , Great North Road, Finchley, London Plot Number 1049.'

    Barclay:
    'Sir, that's a cemetery!'

    Family Member:
'Well, what do you do with dead people on your planet?'.............

Similar thing happened to us a few years ago, I just told them what had happened and they said there will be charges on the account, I said I wish you good luck trying to get them, good bye and that was that.

Don't laugh too hard, I had a very similar scenario a couple of years back, cancelled a credit card after the company announced plans to make an annual charge on customers who paid their cards off every month (obviously because they weren't making enough money out of these customers) bear in mind I am still very much alive.

Account paid off and cancelled, finished or so I thought, about 9 months later received a statement from them stating that when they tried to make the annual service charge against my card the transaction failed, as such I would now be subject to a charge due to failed transaction and late payment charge plus interest, bear in mind this was all within the same bank.

Basically I advised them that their chances of me paying the bill were zero, then the calls from their call centre started, shall we just say that the callers didn't have English as their first language and it is highly likely that I expanded their vocabulary somewhat.

It was only cleared up when I fired off letters to every single head of department I could trace, with a promise that the next letter would be to a national paper.

My closed account had gone from £0 to £168 before it was sorted, you really couldn't make it up.

Never mind credit cards, my mother passed away,my sister told everyone who needed to know, then baliffs came round to my sisters for my mothers mortgage £,said my mother was in arrears. Two words from my sister & they left, without cash. The water board sent my sister an adjusted bill,as my mother was in sheltered accomodation the adjusted bill was for the entire accomodation block!

As a counter balance, I have to say RBS were great when my aunt died last year and I had to handle her affairs. A quick visit to a branch with her death certificate and a copy of her last statement resulted in account closed and balance paid to next of kin within a few days.

A point Silver Fox made is very important though. Always go straight to the top. They hate to be bothered with ordinary people's problems and will do almost anything to get rid of them. I had a problem with my bank a few years ago and, being involved in payroll at the time, had access to the name and private office fax number of the CEO of the bank in question. One fax was all it took to bring a swift resolution, immediate refund of charges and grovelling apology. Now we have the internet, it should be easier for most people to gain access to such details, but the majority won't bother, so your complaint should still stand out.

well ia had a nice little letter from barclay card drop on my front door mat this morning asking me to pay £55.00 immediately or would be charged an extra £12 late pay ment fee. doesnt seem much does it but when i had actually paid off my account in full in november and even said to them when i paid in full that there was deffinately no more transactions coming through and that my account was now clear they said yes, so that was it never used my card since and never received any more statements as i thought the reason for this was because my account was zero so they didnt need to send any so got on with my life as normal not having to worry anymore about barclay card bills until today. i phoned them up , warned them , before i told them what i wanted i was very angry, they explained there was still an outstanding bill of £16.32 from november and the rest is interest from it as its now nearly march and i hadnt paid but they would waver the 55 quid and my statement is back to zero, somehow i smell a rat, i didnt have to fight my case for some reason and i know my account was cleared in november i kept checkin and ringing at the time to make sure as i know some transactions dont register for a while, i know they made a mistake and are not admiting to it, dont trust them anymore getting paranoid now that i feel every now an then i am going to have to ring to check my accounts zero and theres no balls up
