It's been reduced from £12 to £6 as a promotion and has echoes of the discounted fine wines that Aldi and Lidl successfully used to lure middle class shoppers into its stores - part of the reason why it is not available online.

I've not tried it, but having Champagne on the label merely dictates where it is grown, what grapes are in it and how it is manufactured. The same applies for example to large growing areas like Bordeaux - you can pay £6 for a bottle of non-vintage claret, or you can pay £100+ for the same. They won't taste the same.

My own views on champagne are that I would rather drink a £12 bottle of cava than a £12 bottle of champagne. Part of the champagne brand is the experience, whether you are showing off or having a celebration. Turning up with a bottle of own brand, or a brand like this or Nicolas Feuillete for a special gift or celebration makes it a bit of a pound shop celebration. If you want someone to feel special, but can only spend £12 on fizz, get them a bottle of Freixinet Barcelona (Cava). If you are loaded, or its really special then go for a champagne brand that makes the drinkers feel good - Bolly, Laurent Perrier or Louis Roederer if you want to channel "rapper".

We bought a crate of M&S Champagne for a celebration party .
Whilst using the remaining bottles on other occasions it definitely gives me a headache.

Give me Californian Zinfandel White any day.
