FAO Woodlands!! Im preparing!
For my baby squirrel/s
I have already:
Snug and safe 'nest' consisting of a plastic storage container with a lid that has middle cut out and strong mesh over cut out area.
Various cages for when baby is a bit older.
reheatable bean-bag
heat pad
Soft fleece (loop-free) snuggley bedding
Clip-on 40 watt fireglow bulb for overhead heat supply if needed.
1ml to 5ml syringes
internal cage/box thermomiter
Infant/baby dioralyte
Always have broccoli and good vegs in for my own animals
Would need to get:
Your prefered milk formula (puppy? kitten?)
Nipples for syringes or kitten hand rearing bottles
High quality rodent food for weaning (Do have quality hamster and rabbit food in always but not sure if this would be the best, or if rat/guineapig food might be better?)
And of course, I also need a baby squirrel

*For the animals which have endured harm or pain, abuse or neglect, and then been ignored, and left uncared for, struggling, and alone in silent sufferance.*

There is always 'one' isn't there, in this case its me
You do realise that IF you hand rear a GREY squirrel. legally you cannot release it back into the wild, and 'in theory' you need a licence to keep one as a pet!

Also, reading that topic, it appears that if you give 'reds' too much personal care, they become too dependant on beens (human beens) so cannot be succesfully released

Don,t need walkies, got two legs missing, just a cuddle and somewhere to sleep.

I believe that LEGALLY a hand reared grey cannot be released into the wild in an area where reds are living. If there are no resident reds in the area, a grey can be released.

y'see, there is a big difference in 're-releasing' a squirrel into the wild, and 'returning' a squirrel to the wild, and a squirrel accidently escaping its captivity..... It's a loophole as far as Im concerned.
A baby squirrel in the wild is not technically free, it's kept in it's nest by it's parents. It matures, and eventually will 'escape' the nest. Just as a squirrel reared by a substitute parent will be kept in a nest made by that substitute parent.
BUT, squirrels are very good escape artists, and I guess sometimes, if a foster-carer of an orphaned or injured squirrel is taking it to the vet and it happens to escape during the journey, what can one do
And there is nooooooo law stating that it is illegal for a squirrel to accidently escape, because accidents are a bugger like that; they just sort of, well, happen !

I am sorry you see it that way regarding greys KT, its a shame as you may contribute to the local decline of our red squirrels!
For me, a captured/rescued grey should be euthanised, they may look cute but carry a deadly pox - deadly to our indigenous reds if the catch it before being starved to death due to the voracious appetite of greys in a limited food area

Well, I dont see where, ANYwhere that I even mentioned the species of squirrel Id be working with? It was not me who brought the subject on to grey squirrels, I think that it was you who did that? I went with the flow of discussion, sure but I did not at any point state i would be rescuing greys. I havent got a bloody clue if I will even be given a squirrel to work with/nurse yet!
Im more than happy to continue with the discussion, but Ive got to say that sometimes I get really ****** off when people assume things. In another post, someone asked a question, and I replied, then someone else jumps in assuming I was on about something totally different, and gave the impression they thought it was about them personally! I do have an awful lot of tollerance and patience in forum chats and discussions as I think most people will see, but even I can get ******* annoyed when people think for me, instead of asking me outright.
Anyway, back on OP, IF i was offered a squirrel to care for, I would give it the best care I could, regardless of colour.
red squirrels find themselves injured, orphaned, or sick aswel you know!
