One illegal in the UK - had come over to learn English. He needed a good understanding of the language because it was a sure way to join the Police Force in his own country in South Africa. He wanted to join the Police Force so that he could legally bring to justice the four men who had robbed and killed his father, leaving his mother struggling to bring up five children. At the time of the incident, the Police had insufficient evidence to prosecute the four men - but someone had informed on them and he was going to do something about it. I later heard from another person from his area - he had indeed joined the Police.
