Altrincham GIRLS Grammar School ban the use of the word GIRLS to describe their students. But Altrincham BOYS Grammar School will continue to call THEIR Students BOYS. And that moron Dav thinks the Tory heartland is Eutopia.

What happened to treating pupils as individuals?

The title of the school is unchanged so a bit daft.

It is rather discriminatory to the majority of 'girls' expressing their
feminine feelings.

Not living in England, and not using the English language on a day-to-basis, I often get surprised about things that seem to indicate changes in the use of words, compared to when I was there. I notice that the poster uses the word student for pupils who attend grammar schools. I notice that others use the word pupils. When I attended KGV in the early 1950s we were definitely pupils. Students attended universities or colleges or other institutions of higher learning. Is this difference no longer present? Are all now referred to as students?

Changing how they’re addressed as a group isn’t going to change that.

That said, the majority of us attended co-ed schools. In communications we were referred to as children/pupils etc. I don’t have a problem with eliminating gender references, and will never understand why people get so bent out of shape by a decision which doesn’t impact their lives one iota.

I thought exactly the same thing when I was replying to this thread! Maybe it's yet another example of North American terms creeping across the Atlantic. When I came here in '74, I noticed that the term "student" was used for all levels of education.

Good question. Many transgender children will take puberty blockers and receive cross sex hormone treatment while they're still in school. In all likelihood they would also prefer to dress as their identified sex. Will Altrincham Grammar School for Girls provide boys' uniforms?

I would have thought not, mind you I've often wondered why in this day and age we still have single sex schools.

I can think of so many holes in this decision.

Will staff who slip up in addressing pupils in a feminine form be disciplined?

Will parents with strong religious views opt for other schools?

Will ethnic minorities numbers decline?

Is the head teacher looking for her next job?

Will the job description change to co ed school?

I admit that I'm not entirely up to speed on the whole 'gender fluidity' concept, so certain things make some sense, while others leave me scratching my head.

If we accept that gender is indeed fluid for some, then it makes sense to remove those pronouns. But in single sex schools, that doesn't quite work, ie a pupil goes to a 'girl's' school. However, it wouldn't be difficult for a teacher to see which pupils identify as 'fluid' and address them appropriately. I don't see the need to remove gender identifying pronouns from the entire school.

Without launching into a Whitney Houston song, I suppose that if we are to be inclusive and accepting as a society, we should start with the kids. Educate the rank stupidity and bigotry of their elders out of them. Just as young minds absorb technology easier than us oldies, perhaps they can more readily accept an openness in society.

Still leaves me a bit confused, though.

A girl should be allowed to have a 'pash' on another girl without the worry of the loony educators upsetting what has always been a natural
part of puberty.

It is a step back to take away a girls female identity and no doubt a ruddy awful shock if a 'neutral gender' allows a person struggling with feelings that puberty still throws them periods.

The problem is kids are not allowed to be kids anymore, too much pressure is put on them to grow up, they are expected to be Sex Gods/ Godesses and act like Pornstars, it's no wonder they turn their back on what they are.
