More Average Speed Cameras

Also having seen it, it looked more like the bike was over taking a turning car. But that's just my opinion of course.

I'm sorry but your reply has made your post pointless in the context of this thread, that accident would have still happened with or without average speed cameras.

He's just come off a round about, managed to rip the front off a car, not spotted the car is turning(may be, I'm making assumptions here.). Seriously injured himself. I'll let you decide if it's relevant or not.

Point is, everyone thinks they know best, Until the day they don't, and I include myself in that.

I had my only (touching wood) accident on the Tarleton Bypass; I was traveling toward Southport at 65mph (at the time this was within the speed limit).

I was in the nearside lane approaching the then garage (now units of some sort). A car was waiting to exit the forecourt, I moved over to the outside lane to let that car join the dual carriageway. Another car immediately followed that car and pulled out to overtake the car, I was left with nowhere to go and no time to brake sufficiently to avoid running into the back of him.

Would average speed cameras have prevented my accident, probably not except to say I would have only been driving at 50mph (less due to breaking when I hit the car) so my injuries would have been significantly less.

The only reason people don't like average speed cameras is the fact they work. Others just slow drivers down for a few meters.

I actually like them on motorways when there are road works. I think the older systems where a danger on the road. people driving at 70mph+ only to brake when they see white lines on the road, then set off again. That doesn't happen in average speed camera areas.

Personally if I was trying to make roads safer I'd invest heavily in getting people off their mobile phones. People can't even drive in a straight line when they are over engaged in their mobile.

Neither the Council nor the Police receive the money raised from fines, it goes to The Treasury.

It's true that it initially goes into the Treasury's consolidated fund. That is then paid out in grants to police and road safety partnerships.... so it effectively does get returned to the police and councils. Kerching!

1. The money from fines goes to the central exchequer. What is paid back to local authorities is not related to what they paid in, but to what they need.
2. A legally enforceable variable speed, based on the driver's judgement, simply will not work. Look around when we see snow, fog, drizzle, and watch how many people drive too fast and too close, and fail to observe the law re lights. Yes, you should judge speed-within the limit- sometimes the right speed could be 5mph.
3. Speed of itself does not cause accidents. But speed in the hands of a driver not looking far ahead, not paying attention, or in a poorly-maintained vehicle, increases the harm done. And reduces the time for the driver or other road users to take protective action.

"Need" is subjective and often funds go to those who are most busybodylike. That's why we have stupid 20 mph zones, with their expensive signage, that have been proven (in studies in Bristol and Portsmouth) to actually result in more accidents and injuries. It's also why we have ridiculous vehicle-damaging and trade-endangering humps all over the place to compete with the already potholed road surfaces.

We already have laws that cover dangerous driving and driving without due care and attention. These are not reliant on fixed speeds but on the care of the driver to interpret and react to the road conditions in a sensible manner.

An excellent argument for not being so rigid about speed limits. It is the individual driver's negligence or recklessness that should be penalised. We have laws that already cover that; they just need enforcing.
