It can't be Butts Lane as the steps are Peel St/Cobden Road not Peel St/Crowland St.
I believe the was a 2nd bridge to take the lower track to Preston.
There was a third line for shunting Meols Cop sidings/coal yard which merged with the main line around Peel St/Butts lane. My Dad used to work Butts Lane signal Box and all the others around Southport as a Relief Signalman.
Banks/Crossens/Hesketh Park/Roe Lane Junc/Meols Cop/Hawkshead St Junc/ St Lukes/Southport/ Southport South/Portland St/Duke St/Aughton Rd/Birkdale/Crescent Rd/Ainsdale/Freshfield/Eccles Crossing (Formby)/Hightown/Hall Road/Waterloo/ Marsh Lane/Blowick/Butts Lane/Pool Hey/Bescar Lane/Burscough/Ormskirk were the boxes he used to work.

Thanks for all the replies so far. This is all very interesting stuff. I quite enjoy seeing a slither of the past and having it worked out from there.
I wish the powers that be would consider investing in re-opening the Victorian sub-street beneath Nevill Street.
