Peel Street, Crowland Street history
Hello,
Lived in Southport all my life and was driving down Peel Street/Crowland Street recently only to notice a series of concrete steps by the 'low bridge' where you would expect a regular roadside kerb to be.
Does anyone know what this originates from? Did there used to be a train station for e.g?
Thanks in advance

After a bit more digging found this https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butt...ailway_station
Anyone on here old enough to remember it?

It's been closed 80 years so someone remembering it would probably in their nineties. Bit of a long shot.

True, but if I didn't ask I'd never know for sure.

The right place to look for old people.

It can't be Butts Lane as the steps are Peel St/Cobden Road not Peel St/Crowland St.
I believe the was a 2nd bridge to take the lower track to Preston.

I think it was a case of lowering the road under the bridge after the houses were built.

The dip under the Peel St/Cobden Road bridge used to flood regularly maybe this was anticipated during construction when the raised footpath was put in to allow pedestrian access during flooding.

Apologies thread title should read Peel Street/Cobden Road, however if you look on the wiki link, the photo is that exact spot.

The wiki image is the Butts Lane bridge not Peel St.
The Halt was part of the old "Altcar Bob" line which branched off the existing line just before the Foul Lane bridge.

So it is! So are we pretty much agreed then that the forementioned steps are just to aid pedestrians through floods?

There was a branch line at Peel St/Cobden Road to service the Southport Gasworks on Crowland Street. The steps could be related to that.

The line only ever went from Chapel Street to Hillhouse, and, later on, only to Barton. When I was about 4 or 5, goods trains still came into Barton station.
