Please help
Hi there, yesterday I was discussing all the old petrol stations around Birkdale and Southport with a friend and I was saying there was one where Tesco Express on Liverpool Rd is . The problem is, I only have a photo of when it was called Save back in the 90's.
I have no photos of when it was the old Texaco in the 70's and 80's or as someone pointed out to me yesterday it was a different one with a house attached to it even further back in time. My interest sparked after watching a video on youtube called Southport Seasons 1961 - 1962

a few old and new and what's there now.
I thought I'd post a few pics up of sites that may still have a petrol station or a modified one or even a change of format.

I think the garage used to be called the Regent Garage in the 60's, not like the Save Garage when Jimmy Henney had it in the 90's.

Back in the 60's it was called Worcester Garage, and I think from memory that they sold National fuel.

I'm old enough to remember what must have been Southport's smallest petrol station. On Bispham Road. Mosscrop's (the bike shop) had two pumps outside it's main window. I remember being allowed to fill up cars that drove to the pumps. Around 10 I must have been. (Wouldn't be allowed today!!!) We were proud to be allowed to "work". When we didn't "man the pumps" we helped in the workshop behind. What a fantastic man Norman was, he taught almost all of us kids in High Park how to fix our bikes ourselves. Are there still people like that to be found?

Reason: Names should be spelled correctly!
Age is simply a matter of mind - age doesn't matter if you don't mind

Thanks for some help
I think the one on Hill St became a car showroom, Castle Cars later on in its life. Now that site is the Karen Potter estate agents on that corner.
I'm sure there was one at Hillside too around the back of the shops where the newsagents and chippy is. I seem to remember going there a long, long time ago for some reason or the other. Not a lot of room there. It's now occupied by a Land Rover specialist place.

Two in Birkdale you have missed.
The car wash on Eastbourne Road and there was one at the corner of Liverpool Road and Sandon Road where the new houses are.
Also the car was on Kensington Road used to be a petrol station, there used to be one on Sussex Road where the new houses are.

It's quite strange that I missed them, I can't find any photos of the Mobil one on the corner of Sandon Rd anywhere. I lived down the road from it and it was always handy at Christmas and other times when Spar was closed.
When I lived on Claremont Rd that petrol station was a Texaco too and was run by some people I know. After I'd moved away it had become an Elf garage and after that it just vanished. It was overgrown with weeds and stuff for ages and then the Car Wash place came along.
I can't find any photos of that one either from when it was there.

The Spar you mentioned used to be Dalley Brothers. I worked at the sausage and cooked meat factory a few doors down from the Mobil, and next door to Ted Lawrenson the butcher.

Yeah, spot on, it started as Whipps Cooked meats, and later changed names to Southport Cooked Meats, and it was where Halsall's is now. Prior to Joe Whipp having it, it was Parrs Bakery.
My first job was Whipps when I left school in 1967.

I remember going in the Mill Road Ainsdale one, was the Zetland St one where the mobility place is now. Just nearly opposite where the bakery used to be?
Rufford Rd / North Rd corner was Paul Nutbrown's when I lived up there 20 years ago, I kind of lived in the area and passed it once or twice a week.
I was familiar with Holland Motors, one of my family bought a car from there. I think a Ford Escort.
I'm not familiar with some of the others as Hart St, Blowick area and also Banks weren't places I really went to.
