Success in retailing seems to revolve around 2 principles- be special; or be cheap. Any other position is a struggle.

When you look around the retail scene you can see businesses trying to struggle while they are neither or special. WH Smith, for example- what market are they trying to address? A right jungle of a bit of this, and a bit of that, and none of it a bargain. I'm not surprised it scored so low in Which.

I also think Boots is headed the same way. People can easily get the toiletries and OTC medications elsewhere, and for less. It looks doomed to me.

The pound shop idea was interesting ten years ago, but always had an inherent problem coping with inflation. But within a couple of years there were at least three chains all doing fundamentally the same thing.

WH Smith choose their location successfully in town centres and airports.

Boots have dispensing chemists and again usually to be found in airports.
