Poundworld Administration
Looks like the High St in Southport are going to gain another empty shop as Poundworld are heading for administration.
It's all rather grim.

I feel for the people who are going to lose their jobs. But i have not been in Poundworld for along time. The high street is dying a slow death, and it's online shopping that's killing it. Also who wants to go into Southport town centre these days with chuggers, beggers, drunks, and the smell of weed and fag smoke everywhere you go.

There is?
Can't say it's any worse than it was 30 years ago from my recollection.
Although I'd agree the centre is dying, Along with just about every other town in the U.K. and online shopping is killing it.

Sad to see people losing their jobs but all of these Pound* shops are on a short term run. There's only so much cheap **** from China that can be resold at a fixed pound price year after year when rising inflation is taken into account.

The plastic ban is going to be a death knell to all these pound shops.
I mean what will they sell if a sugar tax comes in too?

That has been on the cards for a while. The investment company who purchased Poundworld were found to have accounting anomalies that left it in huge debt. To try to recuperate the money they decided to sell off PoundWorld.

No! A lack of real managers and foresight is killing trade - not the internet!
Years ago, managers had the experience and the autonomy to allow them to run the local business as they saw fit. It allowed them the freedom to make changes in accordance to the local market. Today's 'managers' are people given this title after having acquired a knowledge of company Rules and Regulations and regurgitating them to the staff and customers. They do not have any training in marketing, and they are incapable of following trends - they also have no autonomy whatever since they are robots following orders from Head Office.
The internet is merely another business - to real business managers it is merely just another challenge. It is hampered by high postal costs, delays and the fact that items cannot be inspected before ordering. But it benefits by cutting out the middle man and being able to offer goods at a reduction. There is still many business opportunities for people with imagination, intelligence and hard work. Where in Southport can you purchase individual smart clothing of good quality in a variety of sizes? Where can you purchase fashionable and practical bedding? What choices do you have? There are several shops in town that remain busy - why is this if the internet has taken over?

Whilst I do buy off the internet a lot, I tend to get my bedding, towels etc. from Dunelm, where the quality exceeded the likes of M&S, and cheaper. They , in my opinion, are getting it right.

I think online shopping has played its part, but there are quite a few things that I buy week to week from local shops. Items you want to handle before you buy. Shoes, clothes, fresh produce, toiletries to name just a few.
There are other factors in place. I know several shop owners that have had to cease trading through high rates or high rents. Shops that have been trading for decades. Look at the market: a retailer's graveyard. High rents have seen off nearly every stall. I don't see how the place will be open in 12 months time.
I don't notice weed and fag smoke. There are a few places where people sit and have a cig. If they do smoke, where are they supposed to go? They are outdoors. They aren't half as bad as a lungful of diesel when crossing Lord Street. As for weed smokers, that is rare and I'd rather have them than the alkies aggressively begging for money in every other shop doorway. Now they DO put me off going into the town centre, although I've noticed they are now spreading to other areas. At least they used to go home in the evening, now they're setting up outside shops and restaurants all over town after the main shops close.
There are many factors that figure in the demise of the high street. Online shopping does figure in it, but not wholly. As for Poundworld, when they first opened, everything really was a pound. Now I know that it's almost impossible to continue to keep prices a quid for everything, but an awful lot of the stock can be bought cheaper at Wilkos. Kind of defeats the point of the pound shop.

On Watchdog (the one in the morning with Julia Somerville etc.) they did a report and found that Pound shop packets had less content than other supermarkets/discount retailers and weight to price ratio there was very little difference and in some cases were better value in the supermarkets.
I don't see how a Pound shop is sustainable with all the running costs, if you assume a manager £26k, an assistant manager £18k, then general staff £68k (conservatively) assuming 54 trading hours per week (based on full time but probably spread across more part time) on minimum wage, over £100k in wages alone factor in rent and bills that's an awful lot of £1 products to sell before you even look at making a profit.

Sorry to hear that, which one do you work in?
I have been through a store closure and it is a heartbreaking experience, you see a place you put heart & soul in get pulled apart in front of your eyes.
You will see some genuinely nice people but sadly will see some absolute shockers, haggling over prices and no compassion what so ever.
All you can do is not lower yourself to their standard, smile and keep your chin up.
All the best for the future.
