I remember seeing that on TV as a piece of newsreel during the vietnam war in the 70s, I think it was something to do with napalm bombing, it was shocking then and its shocking now.

This is the photograph that sent shock waves around the world, nine-year-old Kim was pictured fleeing the attack by the South Vietnamese army on her village with her arms outstretched, naked and screaming for help.

Thirty-eight years later Kim has been reunited with Christopher Wain, the ITN correspondent who took her to the nearest hospital after the photograph was taken on June 8, 1972.

Kim told the BBC: "I heard the noise of the bombs then suddenly I saw the fire everywhere around me.

"I was terrified and I ran out of the fire. I was with my brother and my cousin. We just kept running. My clothes were burned off by the fire."

A Vietnamese photographer, Nick Ut, took the photograph as she fled the attack and she was still running when Mr Wain stopped her to pour water on her, while instructing his crew to keep filming.

This reminds of the 'pictures' that were broadacast during the 1980's , during the 'Famine' in Ethiopia, which were 'definatly' made to shock us

This picture was shot by Eddie Adams who won the Pulitzer prize with it. The picture shows Nguyen Ngoc Loan, South Vietnam's national police chief executing a prisoner who was said to be a Viet Cong captain. Once again the public opinion was turned against the war.

re the vietnam war. We visited that part of Vietnam two years ago and the surrounding area is still barren due to the napalm and local people are still having health problems and babies born with disfigurements due to the effects of agent orange. Horrible thing war.

It is, but in her case it's life that has been cruel. In the later picture she's estimated to be between 28 - 30. How many in our culture look like that at her age?

The sad thing is, life in Afghanistan hasn't improved for her. When in 2002 she was asked if she ever felt safe, she responded "No. But life under the Taliban was better. At least there was peace and order."

I can't find the link, but I remember reading one of the men in the photo said they were in an extreme state of shock and they were angry the photo was taken without permission.

Having seen some anti war protesters posters {which i shall not repost here} i can tell you that some pictures do go to far.Nothing wrong with taking pictures to record the horrors of war but to force them down you on the internet when you aren't prepared is going to far.I remember seeing a young girl facedown in the dirt after an American air attack{supposedly} the photographer had taken the photo from her head end down so you could plainly see the hollow skull through the hole in the top of her head & the brain on the floor a few inches away.If the aim of the picture was to shock,it worked.At the time my Daughter was the same age as the dead girl,how could i not have sympathy but i'll never get that picture out of my head.
I actually remember the news footage of the Vietnamese girl running down the road,it was shown at tea time on the 6 o clock news.How times have changed.I'm sure there's moving footage of the Vietcon prisoner being shot.I'm sure i remember that being shown on the news as well.I was so young but how could i forget it after seeing it happen? How times have changed,i doubt they would show it now?

I'm not sure that photo's of the casualties of war should be suppressed. For those who lived during the first half of the last century, the human cost of war was only too apparent. These days we hear of "smart" weapons and "clinical strikes". We see men in uniform on the TV showing tapes of missiles hitting tanks, buildings and bridges, with only the occasional mention of "collateral damage".

But for those on the receiving end, war is nasty. Really, really nasty. People need to be reminded.
