Just seen some bloke with nothing better to do than sit in the back of a transit van on Easter Sunday. Sad!

In this spot, just at the end of the 40 zone, pretty much hidden from the traffic he is trying to catch speeding.

they are always hiding down that stretch , normally near the church , I tend to give these speed awareness places a miss , between cameras , speed humps and moaning old nimbies , driving is getting a PITA ..

Easy money sat in a nice dry van for the day, probably on double-time too, due to Bank Holiday....And keeping the residents/vulnerable road-users safe into the bargain - well done that guy!

Been across that road today, contribution to road safety, nil!!!!!, probably just hoping to catch anyone pushing the speed limits a little because there was sod all on the road, no walkers, no cyclists, no-one lurking behind trees just waiting to jump in the road and very little motor traffic, after doing my own assessment just as you do, no sign of uninsured, unlicensed drivers, nor any potential MOT failures.

That is because people drive at high speeds along there. It is a regular spot (I used that road every day for years). If you lived on that stretch of road you would understand the need for speed checks. Why everyone thinks it is okay to drive at high speed past everyone else's homes I don't know. Looking forward to the speed checks down my road in Ainsdale. Lads driving about 50/60mph down a 20mph.

How many people are even hurt or have accidents down that stretch of road due to speed? Why don't they just add a permanent camera, or one of those flashing LED signs, they seem to work on the coast road from Birkdale to Ainsdale.

They were sitting on the Formby Bypass just up near Lady Green today. There were two of them - one on each side, there was no accident of anything, just heavy traffic. So i assume they were after the extra cash for minor infringements again !

I wouldn't mind but they are never around to deal with the yobs that are causing havoc throughout the town - but are always there to catch someone with a dodgy light etc !

I too went over there today still speeders down there so it hasn't worked, the only thing out of the ordinary was a bloke driving an Audi estate and picking his nose with the little finger of his left hand. Must be the posh way.

If they are in full view they won't catch those driving at excessive speeds. There are too many people driving at high speeds along there including the many farm tractors that are always speeding around that area. Lost count of the number of times speeding tractors have almost taken the side of my car off. I had a big stone catapulted through my windscreen from the tyre of a speeding tractor around there. They were forever on their phones too. They had a solar powered speed sign with a smiley or sad face from what I remember. The difference with the coast road is that they are not driving past peoples homes. There is a primary school there too and they are usually checking speeds during the week when the schools are open. Some people drive way over the speed limit and deserve to get caught.

Modern farm tractors are quicker than they used to be, but flat out they can still only hit 40mph, what speed would you like? through Halsall village and Lydiate/Maghull the limit is 30mph, elsewhere 40 or 50mph along that road, I use that road regularly and very rarely do I see speed freaks, much more likely to come across drivers who appear to mistake the brake pedal for accelerator, of course there are idiots about there always have been, no sympathy for those who drive as if every minute is too precious, but I really don't think that the Halsall road is some sort of Hell's highway as portrayed by some on here.

That short 30mph length through the Village suffers from speeding the same way that other isolated rural 30mph lengths do.....As they are sandwiched between long cross-country runs with higher limits, drivers are reluctant to decelerate just because they pass a couple of 30mph signs. Why bother to slow down, when they can simply ignore that silly 30mph limit and sail through unchallenged?

I also frequent that road, though not as often as that.....How is it then, that people always stack up behind me when I drop to 30mph as I enter, if they ain't speeding?

Because your speedometer reads at roughly 10% above your actual speed, that is why people drive at 33 - 35 normally. They are actually doing around 30 - 31.5
