I take it you have checked the fuse in the plug? Did the machine make any funny noises before stopping or did it just cut out?

If any one out here could fix it why don't you fix it yourself.

Orwell said "If there is hope, it lies in the proles." Whilst champagne socialists see diversity idealised at university, the common folk experience it first hand in their neighbour hoods.

That's our job for today. Went to Currys yesterday and got told by the (tyre kicker type) salesman that modern machines take twice as long to do a wash as the old ones and are built to last half as long. So if a £600 machine is only going to last as long as a £300 machine I'll buy the cheapest. But not from Currys, (I didn't come in here for a lecture ) said my wife. It seems a simple machine is no longer a reality, who uses more that 2 or 3 programs anyway?

Generally new machines are more energy efficient compared to older ones, they use less water and wash at lower temperatures.
Quality does vary, but remember the old adage “buy cheap, buy twice” the washing machine in our household really does take some hammer, after a lot of research we decided on a Bosch, it’s never missed a beat in almost 5 years of almost daily use.

Well I'm buying cheap and buying thrice. . £150 for a recon Bosh delivered, £450 for a new Bosh delivered. There are only two of us & it only gets used a couple of times a week. The money saved on a more modern eco wash is coppers. Also we don't need an all singing all dancing one.

That may be true - I only ever saw one top loader. It was in the 1960s and called a Thor (never heard of them since) but the lady thought it was wonderful.
What you have to remember is that lots of elderly people find it difficult to bend down to load and unload washing from a front loader.
Lots of things in the wash are quite heavy when wet so even if they load the machine using a grabber to put each item in, it is heavier when they have to pull it out and a grabber often isn’t robust enough for damp/wet washing.

My late mother only ever had a “Twin Tub” a washing drum and separate spin dryer side by side and a pair of wooden tongs to transfer the clothes
She only had a tiny kitchen and nowhere to install an automatic,
She kept the Twin Tub under the stairs (access from the kitchen) pulled it out connected it to the sink, supply and drain.
Can’t see people doing that anymore.
