So 800-900 Euros is less than 500 Euros?

They actually envied the British.
This is absolutely not the case.
The notion that the majority of French support le Pen and want to leave the EU, but were somehow thwarted by "immigrants" is nonsense and doesn't stand up to scrutiny.
In the Presidential election last year, Macron and le Pen were pretty much neck and neck after round 1 (24% Macron, 21% le Pen). After round 2, Macron won by about a 2:1 margin (66% vs 34%).
As for these pesky immigrants, their numbers just didn't have that much of an influence on the final result. Besides which, their engagement with politics is much lower than average and is one of the problems which France faces at the moment.
After the ongoing Brexit debacle, support for the EU is now standing at around 60%.
As for envying the Brits, discussions with my neighbours and reading the local press would suggest "pitying” would be a more apt term.

When you ‘suddenly’ decided to go to France did you have to come all the way back for your passports?

As we are currently still full EU members you don't, technically, need a passport. You need an officially recognised form of identification which can be a photocard driving licence issued by any EU member country.
I'm only happy when it rains....

Nope! Carry them with us whenever we go away - we never know where we will end up!

We were asked for passports both on the UK side and the French side. But the funny thing is they only looked at the photographs and identified us by those alone. They never read the Passport.
On the English side after we handed in our passports - I said "I am the illegal one" The response was "I can see that, you have not signed your passport"
They never checked any of the cars - anyone could have been carrying guns, drugs, bombs or anything
