How many of us are going?

It's not every day a steam train comes into Southport and takes passengers for a day out. I don't know if this is a one off once in a lifetime opportunity or if there will be more excursions like this in the future.

Considering it's only £20 more than the normal national rail prices to travel to York by steam, it's well worth the money Hopefully, popular demand will encourage more specials like this one.

There is a pic on here of a steam train exiting Chapel St station on the trip to York, last year (I think). So I think it is highly likely that there will be more if this one proves popular.

My little boy loves steam trains, but, at £70 a person, I'll pass! As a family of five, we could have a holiday for that, and have done, two years on the run!

Last year's tour was on 2 May and diesel loco not steam.
It's a few years since we had a steam loco excursion.

Being mid-week makes it difficult for me, but I would truly love the experience of leaving Southport Chapel St on a steam-hauled train !


Last year I managed to get to Scotland for five days and did all the scenic
Highland routes, including Fort William-Mallaig on The Jocobean. I did things at very short-notice and was very lucky to get a seat; The Jacobean is fully-booked months in advance !

I wish I could convince Mrs AndyK that Scotland would be a lovely place for a holiday. In between trains I managed a day on Skye and eyed the Cuillin traverse with envious eyes, under a clear-blue ( and midge-less) sky. On previous visits I've had a week of rain !

Is the train in the pic Sir Nigel Gresley?

I recall as a young child being on holiday in Cumberland as it then was and my father grabbing me by the hand and telling me we had to hurry because we were going to see Sir Nigel Gresley. We went running through fields and over gate posts and I remember thinking at the time that we didn't seem particularly dressed up for this auspicious occasion but little did I know that we were going to look at a train whizzing by!

Ah, happy days and my dad's Black 5 in its glass case still has pride of place in my window.
