A record number of volunteers, including staff from fast food outlets, were out

in force for Southport’s Rubbish Friends on their latest litter pick.

The clean-up campaign, now in its fourth year and still going strong, was led

by Lib Dem Councillors Pat Keith and Sue McGuire and targeted the area

under the pier which was so litter-strewn that the volunteers filled 48 refuse

bags and also had to dispose of a dumped pushchair.

“ Around 30 people answered the call for this litter pick, including volunteers

from KFC and McDonalds, and we needed every one of them because the

amount of litter we discovered under the pier was disgraceful,” said

Councillor Keith.

“ It was very dispiriting to see how unsightly the area was when we arrived. I

just wish that people would have a stronger sense of civic pride and dispose

of their litter in a proper manner using the many bins distributed around the

town.”

Councillor Keith’s colleague, Councillor Sue McGuire said: “We’re grateful to

the staff from the nearby fast food outlets for turning out and they certainly

showed they were just as fast in clearing the litter. They didn’t make a meal of

it !”

“ If you take pride in your town and would like to be a rubbish friend to

Southport please get in touch. As well as helping to make the town sparkle

it’s great exercise in good company.”

A simple way to stop the litter under the pier, would be to close the skate board park!

Time after time, these volunteers clear up the mess deposited by users of the skate board park

Dump the rubbish back in the skate park or why not erect a high close mesh fence around it to stop the skaters throwing their rubbish over?

....or direct the Litter Wardens to that location.

Not perfect by any means and they probably are dirty little scroats, typical teenagers, but why deprive youngsters of everything eh, better still why not get KFC, MacDonalds etc to get THEIR staff out and clear up the mess. After all its their wrappers, boxes etc!!

If you wait long enough at the Mac at Kew you will see many a "Car" owner usually adult I may add casually chuck out said boxes from their windows after scoffing copious amounts of so called food!
