There are some exciting changes in recycling and waste collections coming to all residents from 1 August which make it easier to recycle more in Sefton.



There’s been a lot of work going on behind the scenes preparing for the new improved service and this has involved rearranging many of the current collection rounds. More information will follow and all households will receive written notification of these changes in July with a new printed collection calendar.

In the meantime although current printed calendars have expired there are no changes. We are asking all residents to continue with their current collection patterns and keep up the good work of recycling.

Cllr John Fairclough, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Locality Services, said: "We have consistently been the top area of Merseyside for recycling rates which is a fantastic achievement. Now we’re planning changes from the 1 August that will make it even easier for our residents to be the best.

"Next month, all residents will be sent a letter explaining the new service arrangements and a printed calendar with their collection dates shown up until 2017.

"In the meantime, you can go to the Sefton Council website where you can find collection dates, the opening times of the local recycling centres and details of what goes in the different bins."

Wow! Bin collection is now " exciting ". As per usual I must be missing something important here . Must try to get out of the house more.

Cllr Fairclough's understanding on the word excitement equates to the reality of cuts to the green bin collection service. Between now and August, we are timetabled to receive three green bin collections. The height of the growing season and they cut the collections; nice one Sefton - you never cease to be the source of controversy.

Well that excitement will overshadow the European Championships.....

Hopefully it sees sense as the approach to recycling/refuse collection is wrong in not being the best strategically for the residents considering:

1) Gardeners probably need the green bins more over the summer months and end Autumn more than ever so one collection a month is not enough. It may even slow things down if the wagons fill up part through the round. So if cost is a consideration then reducing the brown bins in summer would be better.
2) brown bins are probably not as full for the most of the year except Christmas with probably bring easier to compress if needed or more desirable in the boot of the car than grass clippings etc.
3) it doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense to have the cans, bottles etc in a separate collection (other than poor ability to renegotiate/release from a contract with someone else) as would be better to bundle in with brown bin rather than more rounds and bins kicking around the house.

However maybe the "excitement" is the deal has been renegotiated and they have savings which means more green bin collections and like in the past/other councils they're offering free compost bins to try and offset what doesn't fit within three weeks.

Food bins are very useful and good though in case this seems all negative!

Finally, to keep Pratnee interested the consultation on the green bins was a joke (surprised the Libs are proud of this expose) as it only asked the question;

"Do you want to pay for your green bin collection" and didn't give the outcome of "no" as you'll lose a third of the service as in some ways we are paying more for something to fund cuts and/or fund brown bins which the council had no choice to implement.

Is this the time the green box and blue bag is no longer being used and we have to use the brown bin for all recycling

I'm sure that was a thoroughly interesting point you were making. Unfortunately, once again, I can't understand a word you are saying.

Incidentally, I thought you disapproved of people who made critical comments about the Council ("blasting/slamming") so I am rather surprised to see you doing the same. A bit hypocritical, surely?

Ah so you're stupid as well as ignorant? I just had you down as ignorant. I think there is balance to everything and the method they chose would not be the one I would choose. Let's hope the "exciting" news is that they've learnt and improved the service rather than just added yoghurt pots to the list

You've definitely not responded on many questions Cllr.....you run away when asked if you're a Cllr or what the Libs have actually achieved time after time....

I will reiterate, I feel that the whole refuse/recycling could've been done better to benefit the residents and the survey was poorly executed ....do you not agree?

Well one advantage of doing away with the small green recycling box. It will stop what happens now. The recycling being thrown in the general direction of the wagon, and what misses, finishing up on the ground. Then the green box is thrown back onto the ground, damaging them.

I respond to lots of questions - I'm always willing to clarify what I've said.

I don't think it's hypocritical, I've not asked for your name, I'm genuinely interested if you are one of the paid electives representing me? Just needs a yes or no, it's really not that complex.

In terms of point 2, will I find your contact details there?

Anyway, let's not lose sight of the issue, it would be good if the reforms makes the recycling work better for the people and one key element is merging the green bin and the green buckets for paper/cans. The seasonal demand also would be useful to look at, taking away garden waste is much more important in summer than card and vice versa at Christmas time..... Do you at least agree with that?

Ok well I seem to remember being told that Sefton were tied into a 2 year contract for the tins/ jars/ paper collections... maybe that's about to change... Also I believe that if you chuck everything that's recyclable in the brown bin it gets sorted anyway...
It wouldn't surprise me if the green bin collection is cut (madness) but spare a thought for my partner who lives in Blackpool... She has just had a leaflet through the door informing her of a £30 per year charge for green bin collection which started last week. If you don't sign up they drive past, and have said it might take up to a year to collect your unused green bin if you don't pay.... They tell you to take green waste to the tip, or (and this is the funny bit) PUT IT IN YOUR GREY BIN! well done Blackpool on a backwards step and totally unfair stealth charge for something previously included in your rates (or whatever they're called now).
I suspect they will be hoping people will fill their bins forgetting about the charge and then decide to cough up. We are returning the bin...
Blackpool have a large woven bag for all cardboard, everything else recyclable goes in it's own (grey with a blue lid) bin, a second (grey) bin for non recyclable and the now chargeable green bin (which is actually burgundy with a green lid!)
BTW they charge EVERYONE at Blackpool tip for dumping inert waste (bricks, rubble, building materials, soil etc etc) not just traders... but that's another story... no wonder people fly tip...

If Cllr Fairclough thinks the re-arranging of refuse collection schedules is exciting I suggest he gets out more. Perhaps with a bin bag and cleans up some of SOuthport's increasing grot spots. Funny how the more rubbish collections are cut, the more fly tipping occurs....

It should be exciting, it costs about £70 per collection per house
