This week sees improvements to the hourly 15A Cumfybus service through Birkdale, thanks to the efforts of Birkdale Lib Dem councillor Simon Shaw.
Until last week the 15A service from Clive Road used to run through part of Birkdale Village and then turn into Alma Road, crossing the railway line at Upper Aughton Road. Unfortunately this meant that it missed all the normal bus stops within Birkdale Village.
Thanks to the changes achieved by Cllr Shaw, the service now calls at all the Birkdale Village stops, turning into York Road at the Weld Road traffic lights.
“Last year I managed to secure a limited improvement by getting temporary stops placed in Alma Road near the SPAR and opposite the Post Office. However this was never really a safe, long term solution,” explained Cllr Shaw.
“That’s why, back in January, I asked Cumfybus and Merseytravel to consider amending the route so that it crossed the railway line at Birkdale station and went down York Road instead. In particular I highlighted that the stops in the middle of York Road would be of very convenient for patients of The Grange Doctors’ Surgery.”
“I’m pleased to say that, after careful consideration, they agreed to the change, although we had to wait until July to see it happen as bus service changes are only made four times a year to minimize confusion to the public.”
“I realise that those who previously used the stop near McCains on Upper Aughton Road now have further to walk, and I am sorry for that, but overall the new route is a significant improvement.”
Imagine what our councillors could achieve if they could work together as it's confusing that two councillors are claiming this victory as I think it would be even more positive if we could gain comfort that it's not solely narrow party politics:

“I’m pleased we’ve got these extra stops in on a temporary, trial basis, and I hope they prove safe enough to make permanent".
