A Blackpool hospital is to introduce parking charges for Blue badge holders.
Parking for Blue Badge holders is at the moment free at Southport and Ormskirk Hospitals.
Will it be a matter of time before charges are introduced?
Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is to introduce car parking charges for blue badge holders at Blackpool Victoria Hospital from July 3, 2017.
It's because they need the money to help pay for staff and services.
Tim Bennett, Deputy Chief Executive at the Trust, said: “The decision to introduce parking charges for blue badge holders was an extremely difficult one that has not been taken lightly.
“The move however, will bring the Trust into line with many other health organisations and local authorities as there are more than 130 healthcare sites in England which have already introduced charges for blue badge holders.
“All NHS organisations are operating in a challenging financial environment and these new arrangements will support financial decisions we have to make and will protect our front-line services and staffing.

Why should parking be automatically free for blue badge holders?

Quite right too, although in reality no one should have have to pay to park at any hospital. It's not like people parking their cars at the hospital are having a day out, is it.

I don't disagree with a parking charge so long as it is reasonable, the upkeep of parking facilities have to be funded somehow, not from the hospitals limited budget.

Whatever you do... if you have a Blue Badge..... Do NOT forget to put it in view when parking in a blue badge space.
I did manage to get the fine refunded after contacting the Parking company but it did teach me to double check that I had displayed the relevant badge.
