Astles Strikes Late.
Ryan Astles scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to earn Southport a fifth straight victory and maximum points at Boston United.
Astles struck with seconds to play just when it seemed that the Sandgrounders would have to settle for a point after despite leading for much of the game.
Jack Sampson had given the visitors the lead during a first half they dominated but Gavin Allott equalised as Boston turned the game around before Astles had the final say.
“It was a very up-and-down game but we should have put it to bed before half-time,” said manager Liam Watson.
“Our first goal was a fabulous goal and we played some really good football. We created chances and we had a goal ruled out for off-side which was probably on-side.
“But Boston were good and they scored a very good equaliser. At that stage, a draw would have been fair but we were brave in our substitutions, we wanted to out more pace on and Ryan scored a brave goal for us.
“We’ve had a really tough time getting on this run, but now we’re on the run, it can be difficult to come off it.”
The winner from Astles came in the fifth minute if added time, stooping to head home a left-wing cross from Reagan Ogle.
Southport’s football during the first half was excellent, summed up with a carefully-crafted opening goal on 16 minutes.
Brad Bauress brought the ball in from the left and David Morgan touched it into the path of Jack Sampson, who curled a great shot past goalkeeper George Willis.
The visitors proceeded to take control and there was much to admire about the quality of their approach work with chances for David Morgan and Dion Charles.
Jordan Richards also had a 20-yard free-kick touched wide by goalkeeper Willis.
But the home team came on strong after half-time and they equalised with ten minutes to play, Allott heading in a right-wing cross from Max Wright.
Allott also sent a header against a post but it was Astles who came up with the decisive moment.
