A pensioner from Burscough has been jailed after a trial at Preston Crown Court. The 75-year-old was found guilty of a string of sexual assaults against children dating back more than 30 years. George Gutcher, of Manor Avenue, Burscough, was convicted of 17 charges of indecent assault .

The charges relate to three female victims and happened between 1980s and 1990s. Five offences relate to the first female victim, who was aged seven or eight when the crimes began and the court heard she was assaulted in a swimming baths. A further eleven offences related to a second victim who was as young as eight. The third girl was the youngest at between four and six years of age.

Judge Beverley Lunt imposed a seven year jail term, of which he is likely to serve half, and ordered Gutcher to sign the sex offender’s register for life.

How is it that so many of these crimes are only just surfacing? A period of more than forty years in some cases. Have the victims only just complained recently? Did they not complain at the time? Can human memory be accurate after such a lengthy period? A seventy year old can hardly be expected to give a clear statement after such a lengthy period? Surely it is just one person's word against another's? In which case one person's acceptance of wrongdoing may be totally different to another's? Is there a witch hunt in progress for these crimes?

I am not seeking to make excuses for anyone - but is the justice system totally fair in these cases? Or are such cases a fashion of these times?

How is it that these ancient cases receive greater attention than the modern gang rapes that are occurring all over the UK, affecting so many hundreds of young girls to a much more serious degree?

Children is your clue there. Not child. So more than one. So not the word of ONE person against ONE other. But many consistent claims against an individual.

With out knowing the situation I guess it's hard to say why they didn't come forward, Maybe family members, or in a care home where they wouldn't be believed.

But I'm assuming the jury had all the evidence they needed. Or are you saying the dirty ******* who would have been in his 40's at the time should get away with abusing children aged between 4 and 8 because it was ages ago.

The word 'historic' in the title is wrong - it should be 'historical'.

'Historic' means something of importance, e.g. when England won the World Cup it was a historic occasion.

'Historical' means something that happened in the past.

I can recall several instances in which girls have made such accusations which have proved to be false - what other evidence is there to support such cases? So the victims may have been in a care home, or with family members who would not have sympathised with them - forty years before making a complaint? Come on!

It's in the press a lot at the moment. These victims are feeling they will now be believed. As I said there is more than one victim, Their statements will have been cross referenced and after I'm guessing would be several interviews shown to be constant enough to provide enough evidence to convict the pervert.

I'm struggling to see where the issue is here.
