The Ono charity shop on London Street has been ripped off by a devious woman.

After paying for her goods with a fake £20 note she was challenged outside and gave the goods back promising to return with a real note.

She had already spent the change from the fake note.

Ono shop spokesperson said: "Another person has tried to put one over on us by paying with a fake 20. She promised to come back Monday and pay with a real one..she said her name was Stephanie Clarke???

"Again she's on camera so if anyone knows her please tell her to pay up. We are sick of people trying to rip off charity shops. It completely undermines all the hard work of the volunteers and generous donations by the public.

"She was challenged outside after paying and came back in and left the goods, she promised to come in and buy them with a real 20 on Monday, we normally use a pen to detect fake notes but it had been misplaced, needless to say we have bought more and everyone is checking the notes now.

"Also she was given the change of the fake 20 which we didn't get back. which is why she still owes us....she had already spent it, as she was caught in another shop opposite, straight after we realised it was fake."

I find it ironic that Charity Shops are being ripped off. The public donate goods for nothing to the Charity shops in order to raise money for that charity. Those shops charge the highest prices that they can get away with and donate only a tiny percentage of that to the actual charity. i.e between four and six pence in every pound goes to the charity. Those who work in the shops are volunteers - so where does the majority of the money go?

Never heard of this shop before.

Who are they? As they have no Charity number on their site or facebook page. They also don't declare what percentage of their profit goes to charity.

Their web site & FB page doesn't actually say they are a Charity shop. It says they donate a % of profits to charities, but the % is not stated nor the value of any charity donations previously made and to whom.

There is a "Charitable organisation" tag on their FB page but that might just mean they donate to charities rather than being a registered charity ?

Don't think it's a shop I'll be donating to any time soon. Very odd set up.

The average amount paid to the highest earner working for a general charity? The median average worked out at £165,000

hi just a quick note to explain, before ono shop it was debra charity shop, debra closed the store and made all staff and volunteers redundant, as theydisagreed with the land lord. So a member of staff took over the store thus enabling all staff and volunteers to remain in, some having been there for 24 years.
The aim is to continue to support local charities and good causes atm moment we are still raising funds for debra as its a good cause and also donate to the soup kitchen.

We have only been open a few weeks so are still setting up, we are not going to be a registered charity as we wont have control of the business and you have to have been trading for a year and turned over x amount of money before you can even apply.

Aa for the percentage until we have all the running costs of the shop and have traded for at least 6 months we are unable to say an exact fugure, but we hope to give about 30 to 60 percent of the donated items sales.
Also I didn't write the piece on here , but its easy to assume its a registered charity as it was debra before we took over, however if anyone wants to know more they are welcome to come into store and we can have a chat, or ring the mobile on the wesite.

Hi I juts thought I would point out that its not ironic that charity shops get ripped off, fake twentys plague every one in business this time of year. Every shop raising money gives a different percentage and that allways changes due to the direction of this business etc, larger companies spend on advertising to create awareness while local independants don't need too, so we give more more direct to the cause. There are lots of factors that come into play.
Regardless of your experience of prices in shops, nobody deserves to be ripped off, most shops offer clothes that would cost 50 to 60 pound new at under 5 pound, so I would actually disagree that that is a high price. Also our shop (ono) is designed to fix that perceived problem as we welcome offers on any item shoud you think we have got the price wrong.

Thank you for your time. Sorry if I was negative. Just there where alarm bells ringing when it said you where a charity yet there was no charity number or percentage of donation.

I may well pop in. We regularly give to charity, Usually kids clothes and toys the children have grown out of.
