A scheme to recognise Sefton residents who make a difference to life in their local communities has honoured its second group of recipients.

Citizens 4 Good, a joint initiative by Sefton CVS and the Mayor of Sefton’s office, held its second celebration event recently and current Mayor of Sefton Cllr Dave Robinson was the VIP guest.

The presentation ceremony took place at Southport Town Hall and was supported by the Co-op food store on Fylde Road in the town which provided the food for the event.

Citizens 4 Good aims to pay tribute to local people whose kindness, support and good deeds improve the lives of their fellow borough residents.

The 13 residents honoured at the Town Hall event ranged from a man whose volunteering over 42 years has helped more than 5,000 families in crisis, to a woman who, over three decades, has raised thousands of pounds for charities as the conductor of a local singing group.

Councillor Robinson said he was delighted to attend the event and to hear the many examples of the excellent work that people are doing in their local communities.

He commented: “It is such a pleasure to see that so many people are making a difference to communities in Sefton and I look forward to attending the next Citizens 4 Good presentation in March 2018.”

Mike Howlett, Sefton CVS Volunteer and Citizenship Lead, said: “I’d like to thank the Mayor for his continued support of Citizens 4 Good, and also Rachel Wheble, the Co-op’s Member Pioneer for Southport, who was able to arrange the generous donation of food for the evening.

“Following a successful launch in August, Citizens 4 Good has continued to attract plenty of nominations from the public, and we hope that will continue in 2018.”

The next Citizens 4 Good presentation will be taking place in March 2018. For further information about Citizens 4 Good, ring 0151 920 0726 or email info@sefton4good.org.uk.

The full list of recipients was:

    • Carol McClements who supports a wide variety of community members, from the Under 5s and their parent/carers to a social group for over 55s, at St John & St James’ Church Community Centre and the Orrell Trust in Bootle.

    • Cathy Bousfield for her work in growing the Maghull St John Ambulance Cadet Unit.

    • Chris Lodge, the owner of Manor Lodge Foods, for supporting the Let’s Feed Sefton’s Children campaign over the summer.

    • Delia Cook for facilitating a Southport-based Shared Reading Group.

    • Doug Southern and Lorraine Cookson who are founding members of Rubbish Friends, a Southport-based group of volunteer litter pickers.

    • Edna Woodward whose work as the conductor of the Lyric Singers has helped to raise thousands of pounds for a variety of charities over the last three decades.

    • Ian Jones who, for 42 years, has improved the lives of people and families in crisis through his work with Southport & Birkdale Provident Society.

    • John Johnson who has carried out a wide range of community work, from supporting Maghull Scouts to being an elected member of Aintree Hospital Foundation Trust.
