Contractors damage Southport Pier whilst attempting to transport heavy electrical cable. The wooden planks have given way under the weight resulting in severe damage in several places. The new cable is being laid as part of the on going refurbishment.

When I worked for the tourism we was told never to take vehicles down the pier as the structure underneath was never strong enough. I noticed last week at least 7 vans on the decking and wondered how long it would be before something went wrong.

An added bit of refurbishment now required.

The timber used then was a lot stronger than it is now. I was also under the impression that vehicles were not allowed on the pier - but I noticed one evening when there was a function at the end of the pier, that cars were being allowed on it. Is it a profit thing?

Looks to me like bad construction. When laying a house floor you simply do not end all the floorboards onto ½ of a 3" beam, you spread them out. You can't do that in his case, so you need a wider beam - simple!

First of all, these desks don't look very solid and personally, I would replace them. There are some shops with affordable prices on desks. So, you can look at this site and search for the things you need. Anyway, this floor should be renovated and new desks should be bought. This is a good opportunity to buy a good product.
