A cross party group convened at the Salvation Army HQ to plan the shape of any local campaigning for the Remain side in June's EU Referendum.
Those present agreed that most national campaigning for and against was largely negative
It was said that constant claim.counter-claim and rebuttal would just leave the public confused. What was needed was a positive, forward-looking, local message.
The group agreed that EU financial support for such obvious landmarks as the seawall and less marine and beach pollution were important local benefits.
Those present agreed that young and younger peoples votes and interests will be crucial. It was agreed that social media and the internet would be crucial.
"Whether you are for or against staying in the EU ? ", said John Pugh , "this is a big decision with real consequences for lives, jobs and futures -so the more people base their decisions on facts, not rumour or prejudice the better it will turn out."

God are we back in the 70's Out, Out Out...
Why, seriously though, why will it be better than what we have now. If I heard of an Indian Trade delegation, or the Yanks, or Chinese saying they would argue for comparable trade deals if we left, or our old Commonwealth chums who we shafted back in 73 decided to trade with us as if we still ruled the roost, come on!
Nothing has been stated by any. Except people saying Out, or "we have nothing to fear on a Brexit", whatever, FINE back it up with facts or serious options instead of heart thumping rhetoric.

Yes you can and, when as an individual you attend one of their meetings and don't agree with them you never get invited to the next one. OUT!

Sure will, a lot of youngsters in this town and the UK in general will be very interested, unable to get a full time job as a result of a mass influx of Eastern Europeans working for the minimum wage or lower, driving down the expectations of any prospects for full time work. Let's employ UK plumbers, you know it makes sense.
Vote out!

Vote out!
Back in the 40's people from the Indian continent came to the UK, many to work in the textile industries.
The 50's, the same with Caribbean people manning the buses of London etc.
Many Italian women came over after WW2 to work in factories as well.
Now we have Eastern Europeans working in the fields when our lot wont entertain the work, why?
Didn't we have a massive influx of Irish "navvies" to build canals etc as well in the 1800's.
Throughout our history people have come to the UK when we have needed them or when our own wont bother to graft. Who else do we blame next? As for plumbers try Charlie Mullins "Pimlico" self made millionaire by getting off his backside and working hard it can be done.

Does that explain why Cllrs Dawson and Shaw aren't there but may have been busy/elsewhere as would have thought they'd be front and centre with the party leader after the heads up story we got to say he was here to support the councillor campaigns and how strong the team is.
If it was a Tory or Labour event then we'd be hearing how crucial this meeting is tithe town and they were neglecting their duties....
Anyway, the photo does show how disconnected the town "leaders" are as if it's that crucial for the young voters then need to ask why they couldn't get anyone to turn up. You can say at least the Tories are making an effort to get young councillors and people involved in politics despite the Lib stalwart "teeny Tories" labels.
Finally, if the group is looking for "positive forward thinking local messages" I wouldn't look to the Libs who are masters of slam, blast and disappointment with the block of anything ....a tram from the pier to ASDA was their last attempt!

Back in the 40's people from the Indian continent came to the UK, many to work in the textile industries.
Guess what, not many from the Indian (sub-continent?) working in the textile industries in the UK now. Manufacturing industry down from 48% of the UK economy to somewhere in the region of 13% by 2013
the same with Caribbean people manning the buses of London etc
.
What ever happened to all those bus conductors?
Many Italian women came over after WW2 to work in factories as well.
Many UK building workers went over to Saudi Arabia in the 70's, but they're still beheading people
Now we have Eastern Europeans working in the fields when our lot wont entertain the work, why?
Which 'lot' are they? The ones that won't be taken for a ride by the 'Gangmasters'!
Didn't we have a massive influx of Irish "navvies" to build canals etc as well in the 1800's.
Yes they did, working in intolerable conditions for a few pence a day; still when there's no spuds to eat.
Throughout our history people have come to the UK when we have needed them
Are you part of the system that needs cheap labour to service your existence?
Charlie Mullins "Pimlico" self made millionaire
This would be be the same Mr Mullins who doesn't like customers leaving "unfair" reviews on his web site. The same Mr Mullins who employs plumbers, as 'self employed' plumbers, thus denying the Inland Revenue of income via PAYE and National Insurance contributions, the scheme devised to avoid equality laws and deny workers employment rights, who then terminates the same employees but denies them employment rights.
A pillar of the community you would have us believe, others would take a differing view
As for "when our own wont bother to graft" "getting off his backside and working hard it can be done."
It can be done; I know, I've done it, working up to 80 hours a week, employing people on 'livable wages' paying holidays, PAYE and NI contributuons. I won't be taking lessons from Mr Mullins or his 'ilk' and I'm not a millionaire.
My point is, I won't be championing low wages or exploitation, that's one of the reasons why I'm voting out!

At least you didn't come back with Out, Out, Out as a response that's a positive point, might even be a chance that people will vote by thinking about it first.
You have an opinion on my points fair point all I was stating where events that have shaped our country over years and still do.
Bus conductors, don't need them now buses haven't had them for years, neither navvies, nor Italian immigrants, textile workers etc, etc things change, yes I've worked crazy hours so no change there since about 15 years of age.
Oh, they will still behead people in Saudi Arabia whether we are in or out!!
And as for "Charlie Mullins" and equal pay, fair treatment, workers employment rights and all that are because of the EU in some part and if we are out this government for sure would strip them away. So we beg to differ on many points at least you have a more reasoned approach to this issue.

Anyone expecting our MP to represent the views of Southport in the vote if the consensus is out will be disappointed as he's already decided to vote remain according to the Guardian with the rest of the Libs:
http://www.theguardian.com/politics/...-eu-referendum
Doesn't seem very democratic but guess by organising the meeting the view was already made. It'd be nice to have an MP that room the views of the town before making their decision given we elect them to represent us!
