Southport MP Damien Moore has been elected to the House of Commons Select Committee on Petitions.

He has become the most recent member to sit on the committee following its establishment in 2015.

The MP, who was elected in the June General Election has won his place on the committee which allows the public to raise issues directly and see them debated.

Its role is to oversee petitions submitted to Parliament, including both electronically and in the traditional paper format. The committee is one of the youngest in the Commons, formed in 2015, and has grown to be one of the most active and most widely watched parliamentary committees.

In the last year, petitions discussed by the committee have included ending immigration and closing UK borders until ISIS is defeated; making the production, sale, and use of cannabis legal; and blocking Donald Trump, the President of the United States, from entering the United Kingdom to name a few.

Commenting on his recent success, Damien said:

“Petitions have already led to real change on a range of issues. I am looking forward to working with colleagues to continue the success the committee had in the last Parliament and to make sure a wide range of voices are heard in our Democracy.”

“As the committee prepares itself for the new Parliament the petitions website will subsequently be set-up, and I look forward to reviewing both local and national issues pertinent to the British people.”
