Qlocal has received several emails about a dangerous tree in Halsall Road.

This tree has been leaning for a considerable time, but more recently the lean has become 'more pronounced', so much so that a couple of weeks ago, whilst walking to the shop I was startled to see the condition and the lean that the tree was exhibiting. On my way back I looked at it from the opposite footway. I decided to take a photo but it was quite dark and the photo wasn't particularly good.

However I was more concerned with the safety aspect especially as it's adjacent to a busy road and is on a busy footway. I visited the Sefton Council website and reported the tree as being dangerous and left a description of the state of the footway and trees highly dangerous condition.

I expected a confirmation of what action they were hoping to take, but none was forthcoming.

No acknowledgement and no action; that was on the 3rd August. To date as far as I can see nothing has been done, the tree continues to lean and the footway (which is partly tarmac/flags) remains as is.

Now I'm not an arboricultural expert but I don't think anyone could not suggest that the tree is in a dangerous condition and could fall at any time. The consequence of such an action is unthinkable and if in the event of any pedestrian walking past they would undoubtedly suffer serious if not fatal injuries.

The angle that the tree is leaning is 45 degrees and the point at which gravity takes over cannot be far off.

Transco are working in Halsall Road by Guildford Road junction and are making their way up the footway as they replace the old cast iron gas main which is located in the footway, gas service pipes leading to each house have to be reconnected to the new gas main and it goes without saying that the footway around this tree will be disturbed. I think we can guess what the result will be.

no, but you wouldn't want it falling on your head either.

This needs removing before the kids go back to school, maybe it needs one of them councillor types to get a ( pointing ) photo next to it so that they can get it removed and claim the credit for something that should have already been long done.

Now listing at 40 degrees off the horizontal. I'm running a book of the time and degree the tree will fall over, most punters are suggesting 37 degrees and sometime between 03:00 and 05:00 on Wednesday We just need a watchman who can record it all. Someone suggested David Barton. The council have now put some barriers around the base of the tree, covering approximately 6 Sq.metres, the spread of the tree is probably nearer to about 30 sq metres. Sefton plus; safety second.

All bets off now, the tree is down. Sefton's lumberjacks arrived and had the tree down in 5 minutes. Now taking bets on when the footway will be reinstated.
