There are increasing safety fears following the decision to slash the Highway Lines and Signs Renewal budget from £1 million to only £500,000 by the Conservative administration at Lancashire County Council.

And that's despite the facts identified in their own report that 'A lower standard of service (less reflective/faded signs and markings) could increase the risk of collisions' - the report also states that warning signs would only be maintained 'where there is evidence of a significant casualty record.'

County Councillor John Fillis, Ormskirk's Deputy Leader of the Labour Group, will be demanding to know more at this week's full council meeting on Thursday.

"It was stated that 'Warning signs would be maintained where there is evidence of a significant casualty record.'

"Could the Cabinet Member please inform the council and the people of Lancashire, how many people would have to be seriously injured or killed to establish a 'significant casualty record?*

Cllr John Fillis told QLocal this morning: "'Significant casualty record' means people will have to be killed or seriously injured before the council will do anything. The reason we have the signs and lines in the first place is to stop this from happening!

"We have many rural roads with poor lighting right across Lancashire, the lines provide a good road reference for drivers, reducing the risk of collisions especially when driving in the dark.

"The Conservatives claimed last month that they put extra money into roads, but now we have a savage cut in road safety measures. This is an absolute disgrace which the cabinet member for Highways and Transport should reverse.”

This just proves what I have said all along. Lancashire C.C. go to great lengths, telling us how that all the enforcement measures, speed cameras, average speed cameras and mobile speed van checks, each and every day, are because they are passionate about road safety. They don’t really give a damn about road safety, it’s all about raising revenues.
