Over 400 children from nine primary schools in and around Tarleton have taken part in the Giant Story Competition organised by the Friends of Tarleton Library.

In all, 416 entries were submitted by local children ranging in age from five to eleven years old.

Years One and Two were asked to write a story about a Giant in no more than 250 words. Years Three and Four had to write a story about a Giant, a Forest and a Castle without a word limit: Years Five and Six had to write a story about a Giant, a Forest and a Castle with a maximum word-count of 500 words.

Trophies and book-tokens were given to the winner and two runners-up in each of the three age categories. The winner in each category also received a giant goody bag. Certificates were awarded to children whose stories have been Highly Commended and Commended by the Judges, and each child who submitted an entry will receive a Certificate of Participation.

A team of volunteer judges rated the stories according to five criteria - originality, plot, character, language and overall enjoyment. A panel comprised of members of The Friends of Tarleton Library and the Lancashire Authors' Association made the final decisions.

Prizes were presented by the Mayor and Mayoress of West Lancashire Borough Council at a Special Awards Ceremony held at Tarleton Bowling Club on Monday 17th July

Vivien Mumford, Chair of The Friends of Tarleton Library said " We are thrilled to have received so many entries and hope to make the Story Competition an annual event. The Judges have had a very hard job on their hands because so many of the stories are well-written and show lots of imagination. We are hoping to meet some of the young authors over the summer holidays, as there are plenty of exciting activities on offer here at the Library."
