Oh good. Perhaps we will be allowed to ask questions. My son wants to know when his student debt will be written off in its entirety as promised in the General Election campaign. That's why he voted Labour. Corbyn and his chums seem to have gone awfully quiet on this subject lately.

I would like to ask him why he didn't offer a handful of bigoted Northern Irish MP's a chance to use their conscience rather than their greed and get rid of this hapless bunch of clowns we are now stuck with.
All you self righteous individuals that think voting Tory elevates your status above the rest of us should be made to listen to the U-turn after U-turn being announced and the absolute TRIPE that comes out of the mouths of Grayling/Hammond. All is fine and Dandy in the Home Counties they don't know about the rest of the Country as typified by George Gideon's "Northern Powerhouse" rubbish. Pity he didn't leave a map as to WHERE the North is.
As for the educated "commie Terrorist loving scum" well you should stop reading the daily mail and think for yourself. If you think none of your upper class heroes have never met with any terrorist organisations you are deluded. They probably made a few bob arming them.

Two points. First point: Corbyn did not promise that, nor was it in the manifesto. What he told the NME: “There is a block of those that currently have a massive debt, and I’m looking at ways that we could reduce that, ameliorate that, lengthen the period of paying it off, or some other means of reducing that debt burden.”
He added: “I don’t have the simple answer for it at this stage – I don’t think anybody would expect me to, because this election was called unexpectedly; we had two weeks to prepare all of this. But I’m very well aware of that problem.
“And I don’t see why those that had the historical misfortune to be at university during the £9,000 period should be burdened excessively compared to those that went before or those that come after. I will deal with it.”
Second point: doesn't you son understand that Corbyn needs to actually be elected before he can do anything about student debt or anything else, for that matter?

Corbynites can attempt to rewrite Labour's words on student debt as much as they like but the truth is that very many students, my son amongst them, voted Labour in 2017 in response to their promise to "deal" with student debt.
Labour will be reminded of that commitment time and time again and as we saw with the Lib Dems reigning back on what most students considered, rightly or wrongly, to be a promise to them is a very dangerous game to play.

If your son, and the many other students who voted on the basis of a policy as presented in the Daily Mail and then decides they'll vote for somebody else, because the Daily Mail says that Corbyn has done a U turn on something he never said. They'll never make very good students.
If we really are educating cohorts of people who a) vote uncritically in their self-interest and b) vote without researching properly what to them is the biggest issue of the election, then we are all doomed.

Don't embarrass yourself by asking about something that was never promised, he was talking about getting rid of Tuition Fees not righting off existing debt.

So when Corbyn said "I will deal with it" what was he doing? Simply lying?
Are you saying he can't be trusted?

But he did say it and he has done a U-turn.

I'm not the slightest bit embarrassed thanks and it doesn't matter what I think because I didn't vote Labour anyway. What matters is what my son and his contemporaries think and believe as expressed quite vigorously at an event I attended at the weekend. Their unanimous understanding was that Labour promised to eliminate all accrued student debt, so it will be interesting to see what official Labour policy is at the next Election. I think some people might be in for an unpleasant surprise.

It may have escaped your notice, but we still have a Tory government, Labour policy does not figure in Tory handling of the country as is quite evident, pray tell how do you expect Corbyn to carry out any election promises or ambitions? Sadly this does reflect badly on students ability to listen and understand what is actually said, this can only be put to the test at the next election, hopefully not to far distant.

But the issue we are addressing is not one of who is currently in power. It is widely accepted that Labour fared better than expected in June due in no small measure to the overwhelming number of students who voted for Labour's policy of "dealing with" student debt. If it subsequently transpires that they were mislead on this issue, deliberately or otherwise, then it follows that they might not be quite so eager to lend their support to Labour next time round.
I'm simply reflecting the feedback from my son and his student friends on this topic!
