The College Sports Teams offer students a great opportunity to compete and represent the college within their chosen sport. Many of the teams have competed at regional tournaments and it’s great to hear how they are all getting on.

Football

The Men’s football team has been competing in the AOC Sport North West league and are currently 8th in the table. A recent fixture against top of the table Wigan & Leigh College saw an enthralling fixture end in a narrow 5-4 defeat. At the AOC regionals, the team produced a fantastic display, winning all 4 matches in the group stages. The lads then narrowly missed out on a place in the semi-finals, losing their only match in the quarter-finals.

The Women’s football team also competed in the AOC Sport regionals where they came up against some strong competition. Without the experience of playing with each other previously, the girls drew one match, but lost the other 3 which they played.

Netball

The College’s netball team are undefeated in their first three matches and duly top the table on 9 points. This is a tremendous start to the season which recently saw the girls beat the Welsh side Coleg Llandrillo 44-9. Unfortunately the team’s league form has not transpired into the cup competition where they were knocked out in the first round.

Basketball

A closely fought contest with Blackpool Sixth Form saw the Men’s Basketball team knocked out of the AOC Sport National cup by the smallest of margins. The terrifically entertaining game finished with a score line of 49-47.

Golf

The Regional North West Championships took place at Northenden Golf Club. Representing the College was Eva Brunskill, who has qualified for the National Championships which will be held at Morley Hayes Golf Club over 2 days.

Rugby

Competing at the AOC Sport regionals the lads won 2 out of their 3 games. Their only match to end in defeat was due to a penalty try. This saw them narrowly miss out on a place in the semi-finals of the tournament. However this is a promising start as the team look to build on these performances in their upcoming friendlies.

Hockey

Congratulations to Becky Marron, Heather Markland, Lauren Messenger, Rosie Hughes and Meghan Appleton have been selected to represent the North West at the National Championships. This is a terrific achievement and one that the college are extremely proud of.
