Labour can turn Southport around says Shadow Chancellor on latest high profile visit to the town.

Southport needs a Labour Government to help revitalise the town, according to Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell.

Hot on the heels of the visit of Jeremy Corbyn, Southport played host to the senior Labour politician who was here to discuss ideas to regenerate the town with local business and to congratulate local party members on a series of successes since coming second in the general election last year.

Accompanied by Liz Savage, Labour's Parliamentary Candidate for Southport and Sefton Central MP Bill Esterson, the Shadow Chancellor met Southport BID Chief Executive Hugh Evans and Deputy Chair David Price in Wayfarers Arcade to discuss local issues and solutions for the town. Tourism was high on the agenda and severe budget cuts to the local authority were identified as a strong limiting factor in marketing the town; with varying standards of local accommodation also discussed.

The difficulties of the Conservative Government's business rates system and how it impacted on Lord St and the town centre were also a strong topic of conversation.

Before then heading to talk to local shop owners, John McDonnell was upbeat that Labour had the solutions to help the town and that Southport's attraction to tourists could continue with that help:

"When I was a kid I used to come here from Liverpool, I used to love it, we used to come up on trips with the parish ... you've got a different atmosphere here, it's different to anywhere else. It's an asset."

Speaking to Labour members afterwards, he highlighted how Labour will reform the tax system so that corporations and the very wealthy pay their fair share and look at if online giants have unfair advantages over other retailers.

He also vowed to rebuild local government services after Tory and Lib Dem cuts had seen such decline in towns and cities across the country; put investment into coastal communities and high streets to reinvigorate them and explained how Labour planned a package of support for small businesses and the introduction of the £10 an hour minimum wage that will help boost economies such as Southport's by increasing local spending power.

Liz Savage said that the visit was significant:

"It was great to have John here straight after Jeremy Corbyn's visit, it shows just how seriously we take Southport and its regeneration. Labour will provide the investment in services, infrastructure and people that Southport and the borough need to help revitalise the town."

Great to see another high profile Labour politician here taking such an interest in the town and its issues. With nearly a quarter of a billion cut from our borough by the Tories and Lib Dems, there's little doubt it's had a huge impact locally. Labour's plans would see significant reinvestment in the town, borough and our community... and it is badly needed.

This can only come from a coherent set of economic policies which ensures the regions have adequate funding for infrastructure and other types of development. John McDonnell set those policies out when he was here. He does this regularly, all over the country

The public's enthusiasm for the visit of Labour's Deputy leader was clearly overwhelming judging by the photographs. I bet the police had a devil of a job holding the crowds back.

Firstly, he's not the deputy leader... secondly, the photos are of the meeting with Southport BID, it wasn't a public rally?! Bit of a silly comment tbh.

    Wow, really pushing it....

Can Labour keep it up for the next 4 years??

As John mentioned, Southport is an asset, so stop Bootle from stripping it..

What say you Greg? Awaits his predictable reply about a "nearly a quarter of a billion cut"...

    Labours supporters are simply delusional ;

"It was the bombs and bullets and sacrifice made by the likes of Bobby Sands that brought Britain to the negotiating table. The peace we have now is due to the action of the IRA"

The Marxist Mcdonnell is simply saying anything to anyone who is daft enough to listen in a grab for power.

Could any of the Labour acolytes point to anything he has done for Southport ?

If you are uncomfortable with the fact that the Tories and Lib Dems will soon have cut nearly a quarter billion pounds from the borough and the impact that has clearly had locally... there's always this one...

Sefton has actually invested £94m in Southport in capital projects alone... and pumps millions in each year in ongoing support to projects like Atkinson, STCC, Splashworld, etc etc ...it could and would do more if only, yeah, you guessed it, if only £1/4 billion not cut from it! Hardly asset stripping as you like to pretend.

So what we have is the destruction of local services and amenities all around the country while the money saved is then funnelled off into tax breaks for corporations and the already very wealthy... now THAT is asset stripping.

    Any better for you?

Yeah! I guess it must have been like their North London Music Festival. You know, the one where Labour supporters were supposed to attend. Where tickets were £35 each, er...reduced to £10...then eventually given to anyone who would agree to go to it!
I don't think even the Labour mayor was present.

Why didn't McDonnell bring his wife with him? Surely the visit would have appeared a little more genuine rather than presenting a desperate need.

Ha!Ha! You really weren't fooled by his speech were you? Imagine small enterprises in town being able to afford to pay £10 per hour - we would lose the last few shops we have! Investment into Southport? Who would pay? Surely the local people would not be required to pay more, in addition to the higher than average increases that Sefton have already imposed ?? Oh, perhaps the wealthy people would be obliged to fund the less wealthy - what benefits would they receive for tipping up more money?
Corporations would be forced to pay more taxes..........meaning they would move from the UK to other places in the EU where they would not pay so much, increasing the unemployment numbers in the UK! McDonnell can afford to say anything the Labour followers want to hear, he knows the majority would not question what he is saying. Neither his generous salary, nor his position would be at risk, he is well protected by the Unions.
First priorities have to be faced. Young people need to be trained in all types of industry, while we still have the expertise available from those who are well experienced in various industries. Then, young people must be placed in full time jobs in industry, to build and expand this field, to increase exports and for the young to earn sufficient money to afford houses.
There have been no actual cuts in Government money. Prior to this becoming a popular claim, the government gave grants to councils who would then spend frivolously, expecting the government to pay. Recall £50,000 for a report to an outside agency to advise on modernisations to Southport - a service the local people would have provided far more accurately and for free! Remember a sum of £32,000 spent on a course for Road Sweepers to advise them on how to be more efficient?
The amount of money spent on a fairly modern DHSS building for repairs? Money thrown at a cafe enterprise with only a vague knowledge of catering? The government needed Councils to be more accountable for their spending in general, so they reduced the amount of money paid to every council and informed them that their spending should be in alignment with the money that they raised locally. The government will make additional payments for emergency expenditure. It is called good housekeeping!
Before any talks of throwing £billions into pots - there is a need to get the money flowing first!

Certainly not fooled by your claims of "we" Marvin.. you have been caught out for lying about this before... you do not live here, you are from Congleton and you live in Chester... so in this context, your use of "we" is little more than attempt to hoodwink.

Re. your other claims, re. £10/h living wage... you seem to have deliberately ignored the support package for small business, such as expanding the Employment Allowance.
Also, while Labour will increase corporation tax they would still be lower than in EU, so major fail on your claim they'd just up sticks and go... France & Germany both significantly higher for instance. Though hey, with the mess the Tories are making of Brexit maybe they will go regardless?

As to the wealthy, we are talking the top 5% and again, it's just putting it back to where it was before the Tories gave their tax breaks... "the wealthy" were here before that, they will be here after... might mean one or two Russian oligarchs stop donating to the Tories though.

As to your claim there have been no actual govt cuts... sorry, myself and Mrs McDonnell can't stop laughing.

I also recall the Lib Dem’s best idea for improving Southport was a tram between ASDA and the Pier and that’s with their amazing local knowledge coupled with Sue Maguires “shop, play and work local” despite locating her own businesses in Liverpool.

As for the road sweeper training, wonder how much the retraining for the councillors is going to cost, all because they do not know how to behave!

Should've run the ridiculous old commie out of town.

Hope he didn't make any more ludicrous "magic money tree" commitments like this from JezFest:
