Liberal Democrat councillors on Sefton Council are calling for councillors’ pay to be excluded from Labour’s proposal for a 5% across-the-board pay increase from next April.

A motion put forward at Thursday’s (21st September) Council meeting by the controlling Labour Group says that the council ”supports the NJC pay claim for 2018, submitted by UNISON, GMB and Unite” which calls for “a 5% increase on all pay points”.

However, because Members Allowances in Sefton Council are automatically linked to the average pay increase given to Sefton Council employees, a 5% pay increase for all staff, as Labour are proposing, would also mean a 5% pay increase for councillors.

“That’s simply not right,” say Lib Dem Group Deputy Leader Cllr Daniel Lewis, who is proposing a Lib Dem amendment to stop councillors benefiting from a 5% pay rise.

”So that’s why I am proposing that ‘in no circumstances shall any increase in Members Allowances exceed the increase in the rate of inflation’. I hope that Labour councillors will agree with me and my fellow Lib Dems that it is wrong to give ourselves a 5% pay increase.”

Good luck with that, this undemocratic Labour council is both greedy for power and increased salaries.

Perhaps they should practise what they preach, they showed little restraint when they were attacking two young mums last night & the way they dealt with the Ovington Park campaigners and their questions was appalling, little more than orchestrated bullying by them.

I'm sure they would because councillors don't have the power to award anyone a pay increase. The pay awards are awarded nationally by the National Joint Council. The councillors are simply giving their support to the Unions' claim for a 5% increase which the NJC will undoubtedly turn down.

There's more chance of the Lib Dems winning the next General Election than there is of the NJC awarding a 5% rise across the board.

Perhaps they've been learning from your Momentum buddies?

So it looks like our “friendly” libs have tempered down from our Bootle overlords trying to give selves a pay rise to supporting a union recommendation.

However does seem like this old story:

John Pugh makes big deal about telling us he’s saying no to a pay rise:

    John Pugh took pay rise:

    http://www.theipsa.org.uk/mp-costs/your-mp/john-pugh/

It’s reported 25 of his colleagues gave the increase to charity, he’s not listed and I’m sure as with anything lib we’d have full coverage if so:

However sensibly he suggested that pay should be “docked for loutish behaviour “...,which could draw more excitement after yesterday’s area committee!

Finally, as for “restraint over allowances”, have the libs forgotten about the years of channelling office allowances back into the Lib Dem local funds:
