Litter louts who have been caught irresponsibly disposing of rubbish in Sefton have been convicted in court, leading to fines totaling more than £2,000.

Eight people from Sefton and Lancashire failed to appear at South Sefton Magistrates court this week (Tuesday, October 17) after they were spotted by enforcement officers littering in the borough.

They were found guilty in their absence and each given 28 days to pay a fine.

Magistrates handed out a total of £2,176 worth of fines on the day. These included:

Rachel Colbeck, 31, of Stanley Road, Bootle; fined £272.

Jamie Gretton, 23, of Milton Street, Bootle; fined £272.

David Morris, 30, of Convent Close, Ormskirk; fined £272.

Tegan O’Neill, 20, of Saunders Street, Southport; fined £272.

Steven McIntosh, 46, of Beech Trees, Skelmersdale; fined £272.

Gheorghe Becherescu, 32, of Bedford Road, Birkdale; fined £272.

Melissa Davies, 31 of Bedford Road, Birkdale; fined £272.

Melissa Taylor, 23, of the Corners, Thornton, Cleveleys; fined £272.

A spokesman for Sefton Council said:

“It’s simple. If you drop litter and our enforcement officers catch you, you will be fined £75.

“If you fail to pay and your case goes to court, then the fine can be considerably higher.

“It’s a criminal offence to litter and we will not hesitate to fine those who deliberately make our beautiful borough untidy.

“People need to think twice before just throwing their waste away and court cases like these highlight what can happen if you are caught. Either take it home or use a bin.”

And if you're a traveller, member of the orange lodge or one of their followers you'll get away with is as sefton council are not only biased but also pick and choose when to issue said fines.

Maybe but tragically true! Sefton do not take any meaningful action against travellers or on Orange day.

And so unjust and unfair, unless of course you can explain why it is okay for litter wardens and the council to cherry pick who receives fines and who doesn't.

If only that was true. As other posters (with the exception of Ceam, of course), have rightly pointed out, it’s very much a case of cherry picking individuals, the main culprits, the travelling fraternity, are allowed to “invade” this “beautiful borough” , and leave the place in a totally disgusting state, when they leave.

I would love to see all these keyboard warriors, posting from the safety of their bedroom command centres, tip up at a travellers site and spout off what should be done and see how long they last.
Similarly - if those who've posted on here in the past, that they would be happy to confront travellers and ****** up revellers and, were to mobilise on said days, then there would never be a problem again.

I thought we lived in a land with law and order. With police who uphold the law? Together with councils who have delegated powers, use those powers even handedly. If people followed your suggestions we would have a vigilante world of chaos. All the afore mentioned officials are paid for their time by taxes and it is not unrealistic to expect them to perform their duties "without fear of favour". As for key board warriors, you are certainly up there amongst them.

So the 'litter patrol' should pick and choose who to fine and who to ignore? If it's a big burly 25 year old, then they have every excuse to avert their gaze immediately, but a little old lady is going to be £272 down without a second thought?

While travellers and such get away with it, they'll keep doing it. If the council / police don't have the backbone to stop them, why on earth should punishment be meted out to the rest of us?

Orange mens day is no different to any other big town even, All need a big clean up after the event. Air show, fireworks. all the same.

Also cherry picking individuals. what the weak and feeble?
Like the 20 to 46 year old men and women listed above?
Or is it O.K. to dump your **** where ever you like?

As for the travellers. How do you plan on taking travellers to court, when they are of no fixed address? Unfair? yes.. But also uncollectable. Or do you have no perception of reality?

Maybe silly question but how do they get your name and address, or if given why let £75 become £272 by ignoring.

£75 for a cig butt or I guess minor littering seems out of proportion to real crimes. Just my opinion

There is a very easy solution.

Just read a court report for possession of class A drugs, fine £20 plus usual £85 costs

Reality, to own a vehicle, to insure a vehicle for road fund licence and third party/fully comp insurance you must have a fixed address of some sorts even if it's a travellers site. Problem solved.
