A ground-breaking £30 million waste-to-energy plant has been given the go ahead for Southport and will help change the country’s approach to generating power.

The proposed facility, which has been designed by Liverpool-based architects Condy Lofthouse and is being funded by Iona Capital, will create 100 new jobs.

Following planning approval by Sefton Council, which was initially delayed to allow councilors to assess the project’s impact on homes and the area’s road network, construction is due to get underway on the project in the first week of November with Surgo as the contractor.

The first energy is expected to come on stream by 31 March 2017, and the entire plant will be capable of generating 8.8MW of power – enough to heat 1,000 homes.

Andy Armstrong of Condy Lofthouse, which also managed the planning application for the plant, says: “This is the most modern facility of its type in the region and the way it utilises and processes different waste sources makes it one of the most environmentally efficient, too.

“The facility will turn co-mingled municipal waste into energy as well using green waste, food waste and residual waste.

“It’s a ground-breaking investment and is part of the country’s move towards district power generation and storage and away from ‘mother lode’ power sources like Hinkley C. Within five years facilities like this will be much more common and our energy mix more stable as a result.”

Great news - creating jobs and recycling waste! I agree, it would have been useful if the original article had mentioned where it's going to be!

I used to live in Norfolk and there was a lot of controversy about a new energy plant they were building in Thetford Forest, to be fuelled by burning bootiful dried poultry waste. Although not mentioned in the press releases, it became evident that the height of chimney required to carry the smell away was 110 metres (that's 360 feet).

The one for Southport mentions a 'boiler stack' - is that another word for chimney?

Crowland St? WTF?

Council decides to allow Sainsbury's onto Kew Estate. No traffic calming measures. Park and Ride road reamins pointlessly closed, while the traffic lights on Butts Lane / Norwood Road are impossible to get out of.

This area has rising crime, attracts vandals and travellers to the P+R, massive traffic problems and this is how the council respond?!?! A polluting Waste to Energy centre? Did Sefton Council actually inform any of the residents? I received no notification or missed it.

Over my dead body. I'll chain myself to the bloody place if I have to.

Do you regularly check the planning permission website for your road?

Council has a duty to inform the surrounding residents - especially for builds of this nature that will omit heavy pollution, affect house prices and increase traffic. No issue seemingly from Sefton Council that this is near a school. To my knowledge they have not done so. Have the council tried to hide this from residents?
