Anyone caught speeding through Rufford will only have themselves to blame...

The County Council's spent £10,000 to erect three new signs warning of the limits on the A59 near Rufford Old Hall.

A spokesman told QLocal that it's invested in them to reinforce the 30mph speed limit through the village - and encourage people to drive safely.

"The new signs are to replace previous speed indicator signs which had become worn out and beyond repair," he said.

"They have been relocated to both slow traffic as it enters the 30mph limit and as a reminder near the entrance to Rufford Old Hall to reinforce the speed limit by the Hall and on the approach to the centre of the village."

A sign which indicates a vehicle's actual speed has been put up just within the entrance to the 30mph limit. A sign which flashes to indicate the 30mph speed limit has been put up near the entrance to Rufford Old Hall, but is not yet fully operational.

Apparently these types of signs are more effective than speed cameras......and they are not perceived as a government cash generation exercise.

traffic cops spotted out of hours around W.Lancs in a liveried BMW tourer with speed guns - one dropping off point is the entrance to Rufford Old Hall

Those signs are a complete waste of time and money. I was down there on Sunday on my bike and there were lots of people speeding/doing crazy overtakes over the hatchings. The Police need to start hiding down the side of the Rufford Arms again. Great place to wait there as they are totally out of sight and they will catch loads. They are way too visible sat outside rufford old hall.

Word of warning to all those speeding motorists. Look out for blondie in the 3 series marked estate AKA Tacklebury!:

The problem is that 30mph is far too low a speed for that road. 40mph or 50mph would be far more sensible and far safer. Then you wouldn't get the overtakers.

As for police being visible, are they there to catch people or are they there to enforce the speed limit? If they latter, they wouldn't catch anyone.

Nah mate there's a school very near that road and its built up so it has to be 30 mph.

My point regarding the police is that spot is so visible were they sit so the real culprits see them and slow down. If they sit down the lane by the side of the rufford arms they'd nick loads of folk where its 40 mph. I adhere to the speed limits but many don't on that road. No excuses for speeding in built up areas.

Otherwise try riding a bike down there regular and you will soon change your point of view (wink).

It is a built up area so 30mph is right but its a very wide road an from going this way 2 or 3 times a week ive noticed alot of people tend to just carry on at 40mph ish from where the limit drops to 30mph until the corner where the entrance to rufford hall is (where the fuzz often sit with their estate bmw and a speed gun) then people tend to slow down a bit for the roads coming in near the hesketh arms. I tend to do the speed limit as much as possible but if you slow to 30mph from the 40mph you get 'pushed' and overtaken not that it bothers me but some people will speed up a bit in that situation. £10k is a serious amount of money for 3 signs!
