Southport will hope to recover from a nightmare three weeks on Saturday as they travel to struggling Nuneaton Town.
Alan Lewer has seen his side lose their last four games in all competitions, with an aggregate score of 16-1. Factor in the fact that three of the four games were at home and that statistic becomes even more damning.
Nuneaton themselves are by no means in spectacular form, lying just one point outside the National League North relegation places. However, last week they did at least succeed where Southport failed in making it through to the third qualifying round of the FA Cup by virtue of a 3-1 win against Kings Lynn Town.
With such poor league form considered, both sides will be desperate for a win on Saturday, and will also view it as an opportunity. As the Sandgrounders’ next two fixtures are against sides currently in the play-off places it is vital that they take their chance against opposition at the wrong end of the table.
The Sandgrounder’s last visit to Liberty Way was a thriller back in November 2014, when goals from John Marsden, Richard Brodie and Amadou Bakayoko clinched a 3-2 win for Gary Brabin’s side. Nuneaton were relegated that year, with Southport finishing six points and two places above the drop.
If recent form continues, a repeat of those final standings may well be a relief for ‘Port fans come April.
