The 88 Bar and Brasserie on Lord St. has closed down, leaving customers disappointed.

It was one of Southport's favourite night spots after being refurbished a few years ago.

Town Centre Councillor Tony Dawson commented: "The bar and cafe sector in Southport - and Birkdale in particular - has become massively competitive over the last year or so. This makes it very sensitive to the 'fashion of the moment' which makes it difficult for bars to survive - particularly at this time of year.

"What is really needed is more regular footfall in the town centre throughout the year, not just at Christmas and the summer months.

"We need more young people living in the centre of town - there is a clear need to build 'up' to address the huge housing list - instead of throwing up more semis on the green belt.

"The physical form of the old 'Carlton Bar' has been completely transformed under the present ownership and it is a good site on the sunny side of Lord Street. I am confident that if the price is right there will soon be a replacement trying their luck here."

It can't have been that popular, it closed due to lack of customers!

Why not convert it to residential then? The whole Southport centre needs to shrink and then utilise properties for residential use. This will have the twin benefit of a smaller, more vibrant town centre and a greater local population who will use it. This surely has to be better than derelict town centres and continually building on green belt land?

    Good point.

Are the upper floors not already residential?

Too many under age, aggressive drinkers, security staff who had no intention of checking IDs or checking for drugs etc. Not a good atmosphere.

As many of you have failed to notice there are now more empty shops than occupied units, more empty offices than occupied offices and exhorbitant parking charges (most on-street parking spaces are available mid-week i.e.unused) and the blame rests solely on Sefton Council. Urgent remedial action is required to arrest the escalating decline in Southport twon centre before "this town becomes a ghost town" - a hark back to the 1980's for you.........

Can you provide the exact numbers?
Maybe we've failed to notice because it isn't true but I'm open to persuasion by some factual evidence.

There are a lot of empty units and many who wished they could leave but are tied in with leases, but i don't think its the majority........ yet.

The parking charges are a problem but for a skint council they are hard to forgo.

Paying excessively to park for a poor offering must deter many potential customers.

The threat of an overpriced parking fine must be a factor to.

65% of the offices above Lord st's retail premises are empty, 57% of Lord St's retail premises are empty. Doubt it? Suggest you take a walk and count them yourself!

How do you determine how many offices are occupied by walking down the steeet? Many of the upper floors are storage for the shops or are residential.

Not sure how you've come to that conclusion in a discussion about commercial premises.
However I'm sure you wouldn't object if Labour were spend spend spending in Southport.

I'll have a stroll down Lord St later and count the shops myself.
