Aintree University Hospital's Audiology team is urging people to look after their hearing during Deaf Awareness Week, which takes place this week.
Deaf Awareness Week runs from 2-8 May and is organised by the UK Council on Deafness. It aims to raise awareness of the issues and problems experienced by those with hearing loss and deafness and to highlight the services and support available.
One of the preventable causes of hearing loss is due to noise damage and Tony Kay, Head of Audiology Services at Aintree University Hospital wants everyone to take care of their hearing and turn down the volume when possible.
Tony said: "Hearing loss is a gradual process that you don't always notice. Smartphones mean people can listen to music everywhere today and younger generations may experience problems in the future if they don't take care. The good news is that lifestyle changes now may help to protect your hearing and ensure that you can enjoy your music for years to come."
Here's a few simple tips to help protect your hearing:
- Don't have your music too loud when listening to personal music players
- Avoid getting too close to loudspeakers in night clubs and at concerts
- Always use ear protection at loud music events or in noisy work environments.
Information and advice about services available for the Deaf and hard-of-hearing will be available from the Aintree team and partner organisations outside the Aintree Lodge Boardroom at the hospital from 3-6 May, from 10:30am- 3:30pm
Aintree offers a full range of audiology services for adults including hearing aids and runs support groups for tinnitus, balance, and cochlear implants which are open to everyone. Anyone who is experiencing problems with their hearing should contact their GP.
Approximately 1 in 6 people (or 10 million) in the UK are affected by hearing loss and around 2 million people have hearing aids.

Southport and District General Hospital has an excellent, well staffed and equipped audiology department for those who may wish to visit somewhere a little nearer.
