RESULT FA Trophy 1st round Alfreton Town 4 Southport 0
Southport FC crashed out of the FA Trophy this season after they were hammered 4-0 against struggling Alfreton.
Sandgrounders conceded twice at the end of the first-half as they suffered a heavy defeat in the FA Trophy First Round. They only have the League to focus on after being knocked out of all the cup competitions this season.
Southport went close early on when Shaun Whalley fired the ball against the bar after Andy Owens cross in to the box.
Alfreton were the strongest team and they took the lead just before half-time when Anton Brown headed home from close range after Anthony Wilson found space in the box.
Alfreton missed a golden chance to score again when Nathan Jarman sent the ball wide from the penalty spot after a foul by Simon Grand on Anthony Wilson.
Wilson doubled the lead for the home team just before the break when he converted a cross from Jake Moult.
Two minutes into the second half and it was 3-0 to the home side. Nathan Arnold fired a shot against the ball and Jarman fired the ball home from the rebound.
Sandgrounders never looked like pulling a goal back and Paul Clayton wrapped up the win late on with a goal from close range.

Did they play a weakened team today? Wrexham played a second 11 and lost at home to
Hinkley. Its would be a shame if the FA Trophy became devalued by the teams going for promotion not treating it seriously!

Well well well what excuse will they come up with this time?
The sun was in our eyes the first half
We were recovering from the Christmas party
Their goal posts were 4 foot narrower than ours
Turn up, pay up and shut up is the blazer boys motto.

Is the barbed wire round the club to keep the supporters in, and is it legal to have rusty wire on top of a wall in this day and age? Clapham out

Nice to see you all getting behind your home town team again! I'm not overly concerned that we are out of the FA Trophy - although don't get me wrong, it would have been good to progress. The next 5 games against Mansfield, Fleetwood (twice), Cambridge and Luton are crucial, they could set the tone for the rest of the season. Loyal fans will remain right behind the team and club - and be proud to do so. Didn't get to the game today, but no excuses. Yellows.

Can anyone answer my post above regarding a weakened team? I don't support Southport but I am interested in how they get on. Personally all the bickering that goes on just turns me off going to Haig Ave. Get behind the club and team instead of bickering all the time and more people like me would turn up there on a Saturday! Southport have done exceptionally well this season and the team doesn't deserve slagging off by idiots on here.
Grow up, Dave Ball etc and support the team!

After watching Southport struggle against Alfreton the week before ending in a result that flattered Southport it is no surprise that Alfreton battered Southport in the FA Cup.
Alfreton would have been heartened by their performance last week even though they are lower in the league.
By the way - Oi Guthrie stop trying to get sent off, a team of 11 tends to do better than a team of 10 - grow up.

Claphams words - "Of course we could do with more money, to invest in the club in many different ways. They only way that really changes is if we can get more people coming to Haig Avenue."
Dave Ball’s words – “If he wants more people in Haig Avenue reinstate Onthespot”

I think Mr. Clapham wants real supporters. Not users like Rodwell and the alleged backers of him, most of whom have never set foot in Haig Avenue in their lives and definitely not the likes of Ballbag. Speaking of the idiot, what excuses do you think Wrexham or Fleetwood will come up with Ballbag? Or is it only Southport who are rubbish when they lose?
