An early goal from defender Andy Owens made it two wins out of two for Southport FC against high flying Cambridge United on Saturday.
The win moves Sandgrounders up in to 10th position in the Blue Square Premier League after an impressive performance from the home team.

A minute's silence was impeccably upheld by both sets of supporters for Southport fan and steward Dave Ratcliff who passed away last week.
The only goal came after 3 minutes when Andy Owens scored with a superb volley after a long throw in had been cleared by the Cambridge defence.

The visiting team had chances to equalise later in the match but Sandgrounders held on for another clean sheet.
Peter Winn went close when his shot was blocked by defender Steven Akrigg late in the first-half.
Sandgrounders signing Vinny Mukendi went close when he shot wide from Tony Gray’s pass and then Gray had a chance which he headed over the bar.

Sandgrounders defended well in the second half and Cambridge had a few chances to draw level at the end but they couldn’t find an equaliser.
