Southport v Mansfield, Saturday 17th December 2011, Blue Square Bet Prenier

Chris Lever and Jon Brown scored in injury time to give Southport FC a late win over Mansfield Town.

Sandgrounders came from a goal down to pick up all three points after Mansfield had gone down to ten men. Lever led the Southport comeback by scoring twice in the second-half.

Mansfield had the better of the play in the first-half and went close when John Dempster had a low drive that went just wide. Luke O’Neill hit the bar with a free-kick from outside the area and then Adam Murray fired a shot wide.

Sandgrounders came back in to the match just before half-time and they went close when Shaun Whalley made a great run in to the Mansfield box but his shot went over the crossbar.

Mansfield took the lead just after halftime when John Dempster headed home from a Luke O’Neill corner.

Sandgrounders went straight down the other end and pulled goal back when Alan Moogan’s free-kick went to Lever and he fired home from close range.

Mansfield had a great chance to go back in front but keeper Tony McMillan made a great save from Ross Dyer.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men when Richie Sutton was sent off for a foul on Shaun Whalley and he was shown his second yellow card of the game.

Mansfield had another chance when Luke O’Neill crossed the ball in to the box but Lewis Briscoe failed to make any contact.

Sandgrounders went in front in injury time when Kieran Freeman fouled Whalley in the area and Chris Lever made no mistake from the penalty spot.

Jon Brown wrapped up the points in the last minute by firing the ball home from Andy Owens pass.

Another great result for Southport, lets hope we can keep it going into the New Year.

Ps. If we really must have a female announcing the team then we need one that can speak clearly.

agreed that woman is awful at the announcements...fit looking though!!

Why do you want to know who i support?....listen,everyone to their own,but don't stop me from voicing my opinions,i've watched the Port on numerous occasions over the years and just believe that the club with Mr Clapham at the helm are never going to compete in the football league again..

If you want to watch the team week in week out thats fine, but surely the most fanatical supporter can see that this Chairman should surely by now have succeded in his aim for the club IF...and i repeat if,he was as ambitious has he makes out..

Season ticket holders and regular supporters that go through the gates at Haig Ave i salute you,but just take a look at where the club is today............and then think back to the so called 5 and 6 year plans that the Chaiman promised all those years ago....
