    RESULT Stockport 0 Southport 1

Southport FC are still third in the Blue Square Premier table after 1-0 win at struggling Stockport County in front of 4,540 fans.

Sandgrounders had to play most of the match with ten men after Shaun Whalley was sent off early on. Southport have won eight away matches in a row and are 3 points off the top of the table.

Karl Ledsham scored the only goal of the game in the second-half as Sandgrounders held on to pick up maximum points.

Whalley was sent off fter 4 minutes for a late challenge on Stockport keeper Mark Halstead. Stockport pressed forward but Sandgrounders defended well and didn’t let the hoem team have many chances.

A cross in from Michael Paton was headed over by Antonio German and then Sean McConville forced a good save from keeper Tony McMillan.

Stockport made a change at the break but Southport started the second-half well and they nearly scored when a shot from Andy Owens went just wide.

Southport took the lead on 74 minutes when a mistake from keeper Halstead gifted the visitors a goal as he dropped the ball and Karl Ledsham scored a tap in.

Stockport pushed forward but Sandgrounders defended well. Southport nearly scored again late on when Ledsham shot over from Adam Carden’s cross.

Excellent away run, 8 in a row. What do you think has changed from last season? Better players?

  9. JAZIAN says:26/11/2011 05:27 PM
He's probably going through the phone book now. Let’s face it, even by his own admission with the last alleged backer, it doesn’t matter if you DON’T back Rodwell, he will claim you do.
    For the record:-
JAZIAN FULLY SUPPORTS THE TOTALLY DESERVED BAN IMPOSED BY SOUTHPORT F.C. ON RODWELL.

Cor blimey, spectacular work Watson & co. How come nobody's mentioned the housewives' favourite, Daniel O'Donnell, playing in the County defence?

Here's a little game for you to play if you're bored this evening (I first played it the other week at the cup game against Stockport): name some other pairs of teams who could have a "similar name derby".

Dear god. Do ots' alleged backers know the drivel that gets put on here? Please tell me someone; the above person is just someone's sick imagination, and isn't walking the streets of Southport.

Fantastic result! Watson and the players should be proud of themselves after that performance, playing nearly the whole game with 10 men. Excellent travelling support.

    UTP!

The away supporters had to sit in the open air stand (in the rain) whilst a covered stand lay empty!

After asking a steward why, the person who asked was told that it was due to Health & Safety!

Surely having supporters in an open air stand, in the rain would be much more against Health & Safety than having them seated under cover!

I agree have you ever seen your husband at the match ?? the rain will cool him down

I didn't hear one song about OTS ban, far more important things to sing about todayand every match. You couldn't leave the pub long enough to fit in a match at Haig Av by the sounds of things. Also, perhaps Dave Ball has finally thrown his pc out of the window and is currently curled up in the corner of his bedroom having a breakdown.....

Credit to everybody connected with Southport who turned up at Stockport today - just fantastic.

Why do you think I don't go, quite apart from the fact that I don't like football matches?

  25. daveball says:26/11/2011 10:36 PM
I've just returned from today's game and I must say Southport played well under the circumstances but I must point out there were only about 80 or so fellow traveling supporters which was a great disappointment. One thing for sure is I won't be stepping foot into Haig Avenue until OTS is reinstated. You lot don't forget to Turn up, Pay up, and Shut up!

    Clap trap clapham OUT

    OTS in

You couldn't have been at Edgeley Park today if you think there was only 80 traveling fans there.

I would guess at about 400 seated behind he goal.

As for the match, the sending off was at the far end of the pitch to where we sat and I couldn't see what went on.

On the Stockport forum most of their supporters thought it was a harsh sending off and it was the goalkeepers reaction (followed by the crowds chants of "off, off, off") that swayed the ref.

After that the 10 men of Southport, out fought, out battled the 11 of County restricting the home team to just one shot on target that I can remember.

There was an element of good fortune about the goal, but some may say it was poetic justice that it was their goalkeeper who played a big part in the sending off whose error lead to the winning goal.

All in all the most enjoyable awayday for quite some time.
