Southport Conservatives have announced their first five candidates to fight this May’s local election.

Former Councillors Tony Brough and Sir Ron Watson CBE will be seeking re-election in their old Ainsdale and Dukes wards- with accountant Jordan Shandley, maritime pilot Captain Mike Morris and retired English teacher Jacky Bliss standing in Meols, Cambridge and Birkdale wards respectively.

The candidates will be standing on a four point “mini manifesto”, pledging to improve public transport, reduce parking charges, keep Council Tax low, and work alongside the Conservative Government to secure a good deal for Southport following Brexit.

Commenting, Cllr Terry Jones (Ainsdale), who serves as the Association’s Deputy Chairman Political said: “I’m really looking forward to working alongside such a strong slate of candidates in the run up to May.

“Our candidates come from all walks of life, but are united by a shared vision for Southport. Residents can trust their Conservative candidates, if elected, to use their considerable combined experience to be loud voices for our town in Sefton.”

Damien Moore MP said: “It’s great to be standing shoulder to shoulder with such an experienced pool of Conservative candidates this spring.

“Our recent success in our campaign for metal detecting wands to keep residents safe in nightclubs in our town shows what effective teamwork between MP and Councillors can achieve- and I know with greater Conservative representation at a local level we can deliver even more for everyone in Southport.”

Hark, I hear the bottom of the barrel being scraped if this is the best that the Conservatives can put forward. Most of the problems encountered by local Councils have been caused by the austerity programme that the current Conservative Government have inflicted. Why make it even worse by voting for the same at local level.

It would be beneficial if they could come up with candidates that don't look like fat cats.

Magic tree apparently works if you use it to buy DUP votes to stay in power.

    How old are the candidates?

Reminds me of a couple of TV programmes, "All Our Yesterdays" and "Dad's Army."
Still if they do get elected, they should save the council a bob or two on travelling expenses. Watson and Brough must both have bus passes.
