    Southport Market is struggling to survive with two thirds of the spaces empty.

    Traders who have left blame high rents for the demise.

    Rents for stalls start at 66 per week. The Market is open for 6 days a week.

    The refurbished market opened in July 2012 with celebrity chef Simon Rimmer on hand.

    Also at the opening were local Councillors who now seem to have no interest in the building.

    High rents, business rates, bid rates, wages, lack of parking for stall holders and a completely inept management attempting to run what once was a flourishing albeit dated market, a recipe for yet another empty building in the making.

    Yes, I agree with the posting regarding Sefton Council not caring and would much rather keep the New Strand afloat, but the BID should look at market successes such as Bury and Altrincham to see how a thriving facility and attraction is designed and implemented. Altrincham, in particular has a waiting list of traders waiting for spaces to become available.

    Why on earth they allow the open air market on Chapel St I have no idea!

    Surely, it should be in Market St, plenty of room for it, and utilising the empty INDOOR stalls as well

    business rates, will be little to nothing. I've not had to pay small business rates for about 9 years. Always been 100% refunded.

    Exactly. These stalls situated where they are seem to me a real slap in the face for those traders in the market hall trying to establish and maintain their businesses. Surely common sense would suggest that making use of the empty indoor stalls albeit on say daily licence arrangements could potentially increase foot fall for the benefit of everybody in the market. Shame Chapel St was ever pedestrianised in the first place. A mammoth blunder.

    So lets hear what they are then. The term "high rents" is regularly bandied about with no actual figures to back it up. The same gripe is trotted out for town centre shops yet the public inquiry into Sainsbury's opening at Kew revealed that Southport town centre shop rents had been falling year on year and were half what they were a decade earlier.

    Looks tidy enough, It's the stall holders that have to bring he customers in. How can that be blamed on the council.

    I was uder the impresson that te market was run by a management company, the refurb was handled by consultants.

    No, the Council took it back under their control from the private contractor.
